They don't have to be used on the Army, or given weapons training.

it still costs and still a waste of 12months of someones life. Ee already have to study to 16,18 or 21 years. Then several years training in a job. Then time starts running out to have the money to have some fun before deciding to settle down and have kids before the clock runs out. It is a waste of time and resources.

what would you have them do instead? Construction is a massive party of teh economy you want to put 100's of thousands of people out of work for a stereotype.

except as said it will damage our armed forces, cost loads of money the country doesn't have and in general is a bad idea.

But it will make a lot of people who would end up on the dole, much more employable, and arguably make large sections of society more likely to get a job.

Its short term cost increases may well be overtaken by the extra productivity the nation could benefit from.

I am aware there are a lot of ifs and buts in there, but its better got to be a better shot than ASBOs, and other current policies for tackling unemployment, poor qualifications, and generally yobbish-ness.

YES - FOR EVERYONE
Its not about punishing anyone. National Service is to prepare all citizens for the day that they might get called up. It does have a side affect, that it often helps straighten some people out, and often points people who would never have worked into career in the armed forces.

Could not be a more resounding yes from me. I would gladly do it now if it became law!

You would gladly do it if it became law? if you want to do it so much why dont you join the forces now and put your money where your mouth is*

If you already are in the forces then .... carry on....

.

There are much much much better ways to stop dole and yobs than forcing service on everyone. Not only better ways but far more cost effective ways.

Nay

nay

although something similar to national service without the weapons for young offenders. Boarding school with lots of strict regimes and exercise.

The boarding school(s) should have lots of hard labour for the benefit to the public.

I passed my RCB, was sponsored, and changed my mind as i grew close to joining.

My change of heart was largely down to advice from my family who are current, and Ex forces. I decided to attempt to follow a different path, and look back now wholly regretting the fact I did.

What like the current methods of telling them that it isn't their own fault that they are miserable, lemon-faced, good for nothing ********, its societys fault, that we failed them, and here why not have some free money to go and get rat arsed for the rest of your life while you're at it? You'll never amount to nothing or respect anything, but that's ok because the government will happily throw money at you to lay about and do nothing.

, did I ever say the current system was good.

You lot willing to do it or just everyone else?

Although yay for teaching chavs unarmed combat.

I'd do it but I'm a little old now. However it isn't just about teaching people how to fight. It is about discipline, respect and authority. Something the youth of today seems to be lacking.

Why not bring that back, rtaher than a waste of a year of your life, which costs the country money.

Why do people always think one or the other, there are thousands of options and national service is a total waste and silly option.

Yes, and I would have done it.

I've got a lot of mates from various countries who have done it and I wish I had. Most of them have nothing but praise for the process.

Nay.
National Service didn't work and was an arse to maintain (after all it had more to do with maintaining a viable 'enlarged' standing military force than keeping toe rags in line) and a conscript army does not have the highest of standards. Also if we could keep half the little blighters from going AWOL we are only giving them improved organisational fighting skills, not good.

At school I had to pass basic training in the cadet force -same tests as army. I don't take orders very well and didn't like that aspect of it but if I ever need to quickly disassemble and reassemble a rifle I suppose it may be handy. My crawling through mud skills are also pretty damn good. Not sure if the same experience would dechav scum, probably not.
