Manipulating insurance quote

How can you get 'caught' though unless you're specifying things that are untrue?

It's irrelevant what you try putting through the quote systems if what you actually purchase is truthful and honest, surely?

Yup

I ran tons of quotes with different things added / removed etc.. and got caught :(

What does getting "caught" entail and what's the punishment?

Surely the explanation of "I wanted to see how each variable affects the way you're quotation calculations work" should get you out of anything. Nothing dodgy about that.

If they question why you've altered your job description, just say you're actual job description doesn't closely match any offered so you tried all the options that were equally close enough and picked the cheapest. I can't see how they'd have a problem with that either.

It all comes down to them wanting your custom. Any lies that have been made on your policy will come out if you claim. This is where you actually get caught and will no doubt end up with at least a serious amount of hastle. It's therefore in your best interest to chose only truthful options. It just turns out that for a lot of the variables there are more than one truthful options.

Thing is you've got to be as accurate about your insurance as you can possibly be - insurance companies will find any loophole these days not to pay out.

I think perhaps the title is a bit misleading, should be 'customising' rather than manipulate!

Normally put Electronic Engineer on mine, seems Computer Engineer is slightly cheaper.
If they moan about me changing it i will just get my boss to confirm it.

how long have u been with admiral? when i renewed i waffled on abit and they knocked £50 off for being "loyal" i didnt use the renewal they sent me and just started fresh quote on confused and used that on the phone (link the refrence number over the phone). think i saved about £200

Hi there

I've found the following helps reduce quotes, particular online:-

Annual Mileage - Don't over estimate, most have price bands, so 1000-6000 miles, 6001-10,000 miles, 10,000+ miles, 15,000+ miles, 20,000+ miles etc. The more mileage you enter, the higher the quote, so be conservative to get a better price.

Access to another vehicle - Selecting "YES" will reduce the quote.

Job Role - Try different roles, normally there will be a few which fall in line with what you do, so try different ones. For example if I enter senior buyer instead of just buyer it saves me approx £40.

Vehicle value - Again they have value bands, so be realistic. If you buy a car for £700, don't go putting the value as £2000, because the result will be higher insurance premium and at time of payout you will only get market value if car is written off.

Named Drivers - Adding experienced older male/female drivers will greatly reduce a quote, for example you could add your Mum, Dad and Uncle, even if they don't live with you, as long as your the main driver this is perfectly acceptable and can reduce a quotation by hundreds of pounds.

Vehicle parked where - As crazy as it sounds, selecting road tends to give the best price and garaged the highest. This is because insurance are calculating your quote based on risk so if your car is valued under £50,000 selecting road will save you money. This is because people claim for crashing into their garage/driveway etc.

Vehicle Excess - Pretty obvious really, a higher excess should you claim means a lower quotation, as does selecting a 10 month accelerator versus a regular 12 month.

CALL THEM - Once after you've played around online and manage to get your lowest quote, call them and say you've been offered £50 less from a competitor, generally they have some flexibility and will offer a better price.

Check Competitors - Try some brokers, On the Jaguar I pay £390 with 0 NCB with classic line, they beat everyone. Other good ones to try are A-Plan, MCE, Greenflag, LV, Competition Car Insurance, Graham Sykes, Greenlight, Adrian Flux, Aviva are all generally very competitive dependent on what car you drive. :)

Nothing criminal

Toying with different job titles, seeing how much my future premiums would decrease with future increases in Ncb etc..

I got a nasty letter after I took my lowest premium out querying my details

Surprised they would bother doing it to be honest. Further fiddling has reduced it to £503. Will get it for less than £500 somewhere!

Good luck with that but unless it's a matter of principle then it may be better to accept that your time chasing after a £4 saving here (or whatever) is a less effective use of your time than doing something else you might enjoy more and/or it's uneconomical to do so i.e. you've saved £4 but it's cost you £10 worth of time to do so.

It's a matter of principle now ;) This is also totally online so I would hope phoning will get a bit knocked off also, but we will see.

According to Money Saving Expert my job title, Estimator, cannot be improved upon in the technical jobs list :D
