After reading another thread on here just know I thought I would ahve a go at mapping a network drive to my pc to ease the trasnfer of files from downstairs to upstairs. When I try to add a drive I choose the drive letter it I start to browse to th drive I wish to map and i see the computer name listed and i click that and then it asks me for a username an dpasssword but that pc does not use a username nad password so what do i type in there?

type in the username and password for the target machine, if it doesn't have a password, just type the username (might be administrator) if you open task manager (on the target machine) it'll tell you the username

you should set passwords really bud

Right, I checked task manager and found the username of the target pc of where the drive I wish to map is and I type that exactly as it is into the boxes on mine where I am trying to map from and leave the password box blank but that fails too, I ahve tried "administrator" in the password box and nope. What do I do to get it up and running?

have you shared the folder on the target machine?

are you 100% sure there's no password on it? do log-out on that pc and see what logins you have to go back in with (and if it asks for a password)

Also, Once get my above issue fixed then is there a way I can allow others on our home network to be able to access specific folders on a drive on my computer and only specific folders or files and nothing else?

yes there is mate

-i thought you'd done the quickest reply ever then, but you just added another reply to yours :)

might be better off looking up a 'windows file sharing guide', not trying to be pedantic, it's easier for you to find a well written guide instead of me trying to explain when i'm in work

once you've got it working on one pc, it'll all just click into place mate
