Why does this shop still exist?

Wanted to buy a Display port to HDMI adaptor, tried a few places, Wilko B&M and various pound type shops, all had HDMI cables for £1 but no display port type.

Popped into Maplins and they had an adapter for £24.99 and a £14.99 HDMI adapter was told if I bought both it would be £30 some promotion like the second item half price.

Got it off Amazon for £3.99 wont have it today but come on, what a rip off place.

Pointless thread, would love if Amazon opened a shop can just walk in and collect your items.

to be fair I've bought a few small bits and pieces from them when needed (screws and the like) and they were reasonably decent price wise - but yea on some other items they are silly daft overpriced.

but you may want to be aware of competitor talk, even if it's to poo poo them

If they opened a shop they would have to lut
Prices up to cover rent etc etc

Maplin like any other shop now days are for when you need something and dont wanna wait for it

As well as the prices being high they always seem overstaffed when I've been in (which was 2+ years ago). A bit like Currys but with more acne.

Cabling and adaptors have always been very expensive in retail stores with a massive mark up, often over 100%. DSL filters for £9.99, 5m Network cable for the same price etc. As above, they're only really useful in a 'need to now' situation.

As said above, great if you need to now and cannot wait even a day.

Most of their cables are v. expensive compared to other places. Either way, it's really an emergency shop for me now. Sad really.

Maplins is a fictional holiday camp
Maplin is an electronic supplies company which used to be very good when they had one shop in Southend and a decent mail order service. I used to pore for hours over the catalogue, fill out the order form, get my dad to write a cheque and send the order off. A month later, I'd get my stuff and be able to build what I wanted except there would almost always be some items out of stock and they'd send a credit note against the next order.

Maplin are still great for certain things like electronic components if you have a local one that stocks them. Always an enjoyable shop to generally browse, my local one used to be tiny now they have a massive store and there are a couple within walking distance from where I work.

There are usually some very strange looking people in Maplins. The one in Brighton used to have the man/woman thingy working in the warehouse. He/she/shim knew their stuff though, if you ever had to ask for something.

Got that off my chest.

Fact
With my very first post in 2002 I asked a non computer question that featured the shop Maplin and got suspended for two days but no reason given.
As soon as my suspension was lifted I asked the same question and got suspended for a week with no reason given.
I went to the shop (400 yards away) and asked Spie and he said it was because I mentioned Maplin and laughed his head off.

ANYWAY, I live in Maplin, I buy lots of different bits & pieces that I know I can get cheaper but sometimes I want them now and it's on the way home from work or a 2 mile cycle ride from home.

Prime, why do you need to walk in?

Certain types of people go in there and pay the price and keep coming back, most of us wouldn't, but that's why they still exist.
