Marathon

I've never found extraction shooters interesting but played plenty FPS, BRs, etc. Picked up Marathon a couple weeks back (looked like the more interesting one) and was pleasantly surprised.

Random fill squads is always going to be very hit or miss and matchmaking can be annoying (1 blue shield + 2 free kits vs full blue/purple squad) but they handle gear quite well that you don't feel too bad about it.

I don't know what the initial controversy was (probably maximising profits/greed) but the game is really well designed. The map design surprised me most - pretty complex but also thoughtful; props to that team.

PVE mode seems cool, especially for learning them maps and earning some low risk currency, otherwise it can be a bit of steep learning curve trying to figure things out while getting hunted by other players.

It’s really rough playing with random fills, I’ve never managed an extract.

Prefer playing solo. I saw someone say that to get the best out of the extraction mode, play it solo and treat it like a stealth game with ridiculously good AI :P I extract I reckon 2/3 of the time playing solo. Dire Marsh night is easiest as you can hide pretty well, and stalking other players is more fun.

I think I’d prefer it if the maps were a bit bigger, or solo numbers were a bit lower. As it is, you’re more or less guaranteed PvP and there is never any incentive to not shoot first and ask questions later.

I’m still properly hooked on it. Such a great world, the sound design is awesome.

Looking forward to actually being able to see Cryo as a solo. Random fills are probably fine for it too as you’re not under pressure from other squads.

I really hope the game keeps going and they can add more content to build it out, both PvE and PvP.

I think in DM (night) you can also do the sneaky extracts, which helps, but agree that solo is an easier experience. Bit of a shame because I've had some fun games where people play as a team, but it's few and far between, more often than not someone is on the other side of the map dying to a full squad.

I've watched streamers play Cryo and they know exactly where to go, where they're hearing sounds from other squads, etc. but I'm sure they have hundreds of hours on the map. Like you said, PvE will be a nice quality of life to just chill and play/learn the game, especially for new players - I imagine they'll have to add more PvE bot variety at some point if it becomes a full feature.

The game definitely has its own identity vs just some generic extraction shooter so I hope they can hold an audience and keep going.

Well the update is pretty buggy. All faction rewards have been re-awarded so I got loads of salvage.

There's not actually a solo mode with easier bots on the PvE mode, although you can turn fills off. It's pretty nails solo, although I was making progress. Then I tried to use a self-revive and the game crashed. Think I'll leave it until they've fixed it up.

It got me to boot up the game again, but in trios it's very unforgiving.

I think it got to 15k daily players on steam so a small bump but nothing significant.

I was hoping for a pve experience in the mp maps... so I could continue my adventures without human players ruining it for me, especially for a bunch of annoying objectives.

I had my fun when it launched for a couple of weeks and I guess I'm done with the game unless something drastic changes.

I'm looking to get into this I'd rather play it on PC but I can get it on PS5 if needed, my question is how bad is the cheating on pc? wallhacks, ESP, aimbot all that. if it's bad then I might be forced to play it on Ps5 unfortunatly.

Their next updated delayed to December now, which sounds like code for "this game is already in the bin".
Will be shocked if the peak player counts is in the high hundreds by then.

This is their way of killing the own game on the sly, with no new content until December they know numbers will tank even further and then they can claim "It's unsustainable now soz" when the reality is, it is has had no future since launch, but they want to kill it on their own terms with shifting some blame onto players for doing exactly what Bungie want them to do now which is leave in droves.

All very cynical, but Bungie know they're also finished as well.

Such a shame how much they've wasted with this. The lore/story was really cool, the gunplay was fantastic and so enjoyable to play on controller, and the looting etc. was really easy to do. Just feels like they made a niche game for a niche market, extraction shooters really do have a very niche audience.

I still wish they'd gone with classic 6v6 arena multiplayer, 15 hour single player campaign and then had a 3 person 'PvE' mode with all this extraction stuff / raids etc.

Yes I hope they can rescue something from it. Although I think the extraction mode is solid for an extraction shooter, it's just too niche and the market is too congested already, in it's current guise it's dead.

I do hop on occasionally still and always enjoy it when I do, but it's just such a stressful game to play you really need to be a sweat addict to play it a lot.

The Cryo mode was baffling and impossible for casual players....it was like just launching Destiny raids with matchmaking from day 1....just a horrible experience as a casual. That's the main problem with the game tbh....

I'm hoping they are just doing a complete pivot to a PvE focused game.....keep the extraction mode for the sweats. But start building out more PvE content that's playable with matchmaking. There's so much good in the game that would be ace if they just made the gameplay more enjoyable for a wider audience.

Absolutely no chance I'm grinding faction levels again after a season reset.

It’s a very stylish game, and it’s such a shame that all of that is being wasted on an extraction shooter. I genuinely can’t see anything credible launching in December.
Numbers are already in the toilet, and we know GTA 6 will crush a lot of things. I’m not interested in it a new GTA,but it seems I am in an extreme minority there.
Bungie must be one of Sony’s worst ever investments, and they’ve made plenty of bad ones.

The shortest way to set fire to money in game development are the three letters "PvP."

It is incredibly difiicult to make it balanced, profitable and sustainable.

In the end of though this $300M disaster is a direct result of trend chasing, and the obsession with live-service.

SONY are that big of a disaster at the moment, they're starting to make the hoplelessly inept XBOX feel semi-competent.

PvP crowd always go where the flavour of the month is, pve players stick around.
Arc raiders and Marathon both would have retained players better if they had a pve only mode with some form of endgame.

Bungie were never a good investment. By the time Sony picked them up, they were just a husk.
If they just announced Destiny 3 with a snazzy trailer then their value would go through the roof.

Pity there's no one left around to make it.

I still find what happened unbelievable. It's like they made a list called "Things can we do to wreck Destiny 2 while building a new game with the smallest target audience possible" and worked through it.

Disagree with this, you can see from Marathon that they have (or had) an extremely talented development team capable of putting together an exquisitely crafted video game. Marathon is objectively a very well made game....it's simply the wrong game.

Hopefully they can survive like the ex-MS studios that managed to go independent again. Would be a shame to lose the studio, I've enjoyed every game they've ever put out. Halo and Destiny were genuinely industry-changing titles...it's a shame current leadership had them reduced to chasing fads.
