Mark McConville = Legend

I love when England lose at the football because they never shut the **** up about it being the year they're going to win it a

Some quotes that support this assertion please. I asked another poster who made this bizarre seemingly unsupported claim earlier for quotes and none came forward.

Maybe you can do better.

I have no problem with sporting rivalry banter. Got no issues with Scottish fans ribbing English fans at work over our elimination or any bragging following a defeat when we play each other.

But when someone clearly goes out of their way, at high personal expense to get one over on their rivals then in my opinion it goes further than just banter. For example I'm not a Liverpool fan but I still thought it was pathetic when a group of Man U fans paid for a plane to fly over Anfield rubbing in their loss of the title.
The guy was already in Brazil. But regardless it's the World Cup, quite possibly a once in a lifetime experience, why shouldn't he go to a game that he has an interest in?

Edit: I would agree with you if it was some friendly game he had specifically spent thousands to travel to being maybe a bit excessive.

Are you insane? He didn't fly to Brazil, buy a ticket for that one game just to 'get one over' on England.

He was already in Brazil for the world cup.

You mean aside from every year in the press when the contests roll around? You mean aside from the thousands of fans who travel abroad every year when the contests roll around? You mean aside from Joe Hart just earlier on this week?

Don't play dumb.

Don't see a reason for any negativity he's not English why should he support us or not take solace in our defeats, good on ya Mark McConville.

As an Englishman with a sense of humour I found it quite funny :)

you know whats worse is the chap could have just got a cheap ticket and gone in watched. who knows nothing wrong if the haggis eater wants to cheer.

people should just calm down laddy . typical crying racism journalism.

Isn't banter meant to be light hearted and amusing? Not unfunny and to be honest, borderline racist.

Racist, lawd.

It's a bit of friendly banter between Jocks and the English. If taken in any other way then that's unfortunate. Yes some Scottish will want the English to lose at anything, but then their just idiots. I'd imagine it also works the other way round, infact I know it does.

And yet still not a single quote to back up your claims, sigh.

Oh and are you seriously arguing that fans travelling to see their team is some declaration of arrogance and expectation they will win the tournament?

To be fair, it's been downplayed a lot this time almost to the point of being too negative. Think I've only heard a couple of, not even direct, mentions to '66 as well.

Love it when an England fan pulls the "chip on the shoulder" routine, you know when they can't take the banter LOL!

So, banter is when you spend money on going to a world cup that your team had failed to qualify for and support the teams you have nothing to do with, as a team you don't like is their opposition?

Funny bunch.

I have never understood this obsession with some Scots of seeing England losing. Most English football fans I know would now be supporting Scotland if they were still in the World Cup now that we have gone out. It is pretty sad.

He was there any way.

But, why shouldn't he go to the World Cup, it is one of things I want to do at some point regardless of Scotland ever qualifying. Pretty much any game you'll see England flags, Scotland flags or any nation flags hung up regardless of who's playing because it's a massive footballing spectacle.

Edit: Maybe hanging some fans up from other nations would be a bit excessive

I thought you spent most of you time reading or watching the news? Or do you just watch the news and not bother with the sport? Search google, or you can do play dumb with the whole "lolol gib ebidunce plz" if you want.

Oh and are you seriously arguing that fans travelling to see their team is some declaration of arrogance and expectation they will win the tournament?

Continuing to go to watch the frankly dire England team crash out of another European or International competition, believing it is going to be the year they finally manage to win is the epitome of expectant arrogance.

The only thing I dread more than nuclear war is England winning the world cup. Because if you think the English are bad at trotting out 1966 even today, by Christ we're in for it when they finally do win again.

We've now just perfected the art of embarrassing ourselves in qualifiers.

:D

I never quite get why Eng vs. Sco banter isn't taken the same way as Eng vs. Aus banter. We seem to take that (which is a lot harsher ime) on the chin, yet with Scotland, anything seems much more hurtful. Home nations high five --- denied!

Aye but when/if you do go as a neutral will you

A) Try and get your hands on any ticket to any match (or try and get tickets to see whoever has the best players) and just be happy to be there and at best applaud both teams equally.

B) Actively seek out tickets for the teams England are playing, dress up in a manner that will attract the most attention and then celebrate the win as if your own team had just won.
