Its something i've always thought of moving to once i'd got my Judo back up to a decent level and i see Ju Jitsu as the next rung on the ladder towards MMA.

Are you thinking modern JJ, Brazilian JJ, traditional JJ? Styles vary but my understanding is that Brazilian Ju Jitsu will provide the most benefit as it will train you on the ground primarily, whereas there may be little value to switching to a standing Ju Jitsu style when your Judo should have more than covered those techniques.

Also, how is your striking? As you'll no doubt need at least basic striking skills for MMA.

My striking is to be fair pretty rubbish, other than a few kick boxing lessons i haven't really done any. Maybe my knowledge of the other forms of martial arts is a bit lacking but i was under the impression that Brazilian was the best all round in terms of standing and ground game.

"Typical" BJJ is a ground game that teaches you how to work off your back and also to work on top of your opponent to either submit or ground'n'pound. Good instructors who aren't teaching in just a sport manner may also teach some/many standing techniques - your mileage may vary.

BJJ is an invaluable skill in MMA but it is primarily a ground-based art. Between standing Judo skills and ground BJJ skills you would be reasonably well equipped for the grapple but it's not going to teach you to slug it out.

BJJ was a fool-proof counter to strikers only when they were pure strikers who didn't know how sprawl or avoid take downs or to get back up again.

BJJ is great, but a lot of teachers are closed minded regarding what they teach and the way they teach.

Not all places are like that mind.

Another option is submission wrestling, it's no-gi and they use everything that BJJ guys use, plus anything else that works. It's more a frame of mind than a style, they steal and borrow moves from any grappling art. Leg locks, neck cranks, muscle crushes, spine locks all sorts.

Or Sambo which is basically russian Judo, but they are leglock masters.

Even if you want to do MMA I wouldn't completely give up Judo, it has it's place in MMA just like all the other arts.

Why is it whenever I see the words "Martial Arts", I always think of "Marital Aids", I think I'm twisted beyond words ;)

.

Have you tried Sambo? Just wondering if people here have experience of it - I think we have quite a few BJJ, judo, TKD, MT etc but no one had mentioned Sambo till you and lets face it we all must be curious. Sometimes I feel that I can execute MT and BJJ well and some of the stuff I have learnt in other styles but I always feel like I never have that fluency between various positions. The only person who I feel really has ever shown that fluidity perfectly is Fedor and I am wondering whether that is just him being a bit Godly or whether it is a result of his Sambo. I like that casting punching style he does - it almost seems to be that if you miss your arm ends up in position for a throw or at worst a good clinch position.

There is a video about casting punches, one of the people on the forums I go on posted it. They are designed to get the clinch if the punch isn't successful, very cool.

I haven't done Sambo no, but we do leg locks and standing leg lock entries where I train, which is sambo stuff.

Going to my second class of Kuk Sool Won (spelling?) tonight, looking forward to it. Not sure how decent the teacher is yet, I get a free month before signing up so I'll decide to stay/leave it tonight or next week.

Just reading wikipedia about that, and if you get to grandmaster level you get to wear a gold uniform. Sweet.
