Hello People,

I'm considering taking up a martial art. Not only to keep fit but to gain confidence.

I like the combination of kicking and punching so I am told Tae Kwon Do might be a suitable choice.

My question to you all is; any recommendations?

It does depend on what you're doing it for, but nonetheless, the people who are the best at punching and kicking (MMA fighters) do Muay Thai / Boxing

Muay thai is just as disciplined as karate, TKD .etc whn you see a real school or practitioner fight.

But it does come down to the instructor/school really, in my case kickboxing is taught at a martial arts dojo so is taught in a gi traditionally. While muay thai is twice a week in the uni gym. Two very different experiences, so I think it depends on what your choices are locally.

My aim isn't to be an MMA. I'm a girl!!! I would want to do competions and get graded etc.

Any information more information about Muay Thai??

Well if getting graded is of interest, I'd really reccomend Kickboxing, I know a lot of girls that take it and get belts .etc (I just train the technique for MMA funnily enough :p)

Muay thai doesn't have grades as such traditionally.

But a big yes for kickboxing as I've seen some girls really get more confident since picking it up :)

Big thanks crunchman!! I'm going to look into kickboxing any websites to recommend? Good luck on the MMA front.

Any other recommendations thus far it's an extremly one sided debate!

Bit OT but have you ever competed in MMA Crunchman?

We have just told you arguably the 2 best kicking/punching martial arts, there are indeed more but if you want to find out about them I'd suggest going to the classes and trying them out.

We need lots of other martial artists to appear then :P

I've only experience of Judo, BJJ, Thai and Boxing.

My father in law in a black belt in kyokushin karate that's one of the badass forms of karate where they actually spar properly (no punches to the head though) it has arguably a more intense condition routine than Thai.

np Ambiguous, once you find a kickboxing school mention you are looking at other places and they'll probably give you a couple of sessions for free, hell most will give your first lesson for free anyway.

Nah haven't competed yet, only just recently decided to focus more on eventually competing so have been cutting weight for the past month or so (Was just weightlifting).
So atm it's a case of seeing which class I suit best, I'm sitting at about 177 pounds atm so the aim is probably 170 division, but that means getting below it and bulk up lean.

Hope to be fighting the first quarter next year :)

Again ot, have you got any fights coming soon ? I remember reading your thread a while back, were you fighting under pro rules ?

Badass form of karate a bit of an oxymoron? :p!!
What was your experience with the martial arts listed?

Do you want a striking or a grappling art ?

Whilst a few incorporate sweeps, or some chops (:p), they are mainly one dimensional.

But if you would rather grapple, I'd wholeheartedly vote for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, probably the best martial art that proves technique > size/strength. And is great for cardio, few mins of rolling and you're sweating like crazy !

Watch some videos of kyokushin, it is indeed badass.

Crunchman I have fought twice, both semi pro rules (same as pro but no elbows or knees to head) won both, but I haven't trained in 4 or so months, my gym went down hill and I'm currently looking for a new one that doesn't cost £124124921 a month!

I fought at 65kg then 62kg, but next time I fight I want to make 60kg, which shouldn't be an issue.

Ah, sorry to hear about your gym. My place is a bit of a shack, really small but super cheap and a great bunch of guys. £10 a week for 4 sessions or £4 per session, it's the BJJ that costs an arm and a leg round here :/

Don't think I could ever make 60kg :o, totally regret doing bodybuilding routines for the past few months :D

I went to a Jiu jitsu class but I didnt enjoy it. Rolling around with another girl may have been enjoyable for the guys ..

Grappling not my bag!
