Marvin Minsky has died

I'm still not sure what you're trying to argue, yes MIT are a world class university... you can say similar things about other world class universities.

'What I'm saying is that Oxford have managed to create a place where minds come together and collide.'

'What I'm saying is that Cambridge have managed to create a place where minds come together and collide.'

etc..

So have OCUK so this proves nothing :D

Are oxford and cambridge in the same league as MIT on technology

This might be what most people recognise, Minsky was the developer of this machine

I personally think there should be a random delay in there, like you woke something up instead of an immediate reaction to switch itself off

Awesome post - thanks.

I didn't know his mentor was none other than Claude Shannon.

Ok. I was just expressing my view that MIT seem to be a hub for new theories/technologies etc. They appear to be leading the world in certain areas and I think we could do better in the UK if we had more funding. I wasn't looking for an argument :)

I first read Steven Levy's (no relation to 5UB) book Hackers 15 or so years ago. Brilliant book that goes a lot into Marvin Minsky and his contemporaries. Still love the bit about a robot arm set up with a camera trying to hit Minskys head with a ping pong paddle, because it thought the light shining off his head was a ping pong ball.
A sad loss and a pioneer in computing.
