Mass Effect 1 Forcing AA.

try renaming the mass effect exe to UT3.exe. you'll still have to force AA in the control panel but it should work. mine is still downloaded so i cant try it yet :)

Tried. steam rubbishness doesnt allow it. The game refuses to start its impossible. Wish i had got it on disk now. Thats why i wont buy a game off steam that uses the UT3 engine anymore. Cant stand jaggies. If i try to rename it says that its unavailible when i try to start the game.

ahh, forgot it might do that.

so the answer lies in the ati drives then, as it does work for ut3 based engines when you rename the exe to ut3.exe. we need to force the drivers to use that optimisation for other ut3 games...umm, somehow lol

Create a shortcut to the renamed .exe and use that instead of the steam shortcut.

I can confirm that forcing AA through the CC for mass effect 1 does not work. Im not talking about mass effect 2.

Well, the thread stands at 4 for and two against (including yourself) at the moment, so...

I just went and turned it off in ccc just to prove to myself I wasnt going nuts, and I didnt even need to get into the game to start seeing jaggies - you can see then on the 2D mass relay load screen. You cant with 8xAA forced on in ccc.

It works. And in my experience does so for all games.

Ok, first try for me in CCC. Set AA to 'box' which x16 and I get 60 fps (admittedly on board the ship) and the AA works fine. Setting it to x24 and the frame rate plummets to around 20.

I reinstalled my driver and oddly it now works. Is it me or does the AA through the cc poor? Its on on ME1 but it does seem to have made a lot of difference. Still pretty much the same level of jaggies on the lines of walls.

I am using 10.4, yes I bought it in the Steam sale. No, I haven't had to do anything like you mentioned to get it to work.

I just edit my post got it working. But it just seems that AA through CC is poor. Pretty much hasnt done much to remove a lot of the jaggies. a lot of the lines on walls are the same. I know its worked now as edge detect has taken a massive hit of 20fps.

You say 20fps, is that in out door environments? I couldn't see any jaggies when I loaded up my current position (I am almost at the very beginning). I am using 'box' AA which is x16. Maybe I'll be getting 20fps in some parts. Would play it tonight but am currently playing something else.

In doors mate. It dips to 20 fps that is with edge detect. I still notice the same jaggies on the ship. Maybe The jaggies on the ship cannot be ironed out.

Imo I wouldn't bother trying to rename anything and perhaps try an older driver, unless you are happy with 10.5 for other games. I can't really notice any jaggies and my AA is the lowest standard within CCC. You're using the highest, that's why you're getting 20fps.
What res do you play at?

I'll reload it again and a good look round the ship to see if I spot any rough edges.
Hmmm...once I got to the planet surface although the fps was fine, it was all over the place. Peaks and troughs, playable most certainly but not ideal. So I turned the AA off and all is well, tbh I don't notice the jaggies that much at all.

Im running at 1920x1080. Like i said the jaggies are the same on all settings in cc. Box and edge detect. I have just left it on 16x box as theirs no difference with edge detect apart from some corruption. You should be able to run ME1 on your hardware with box AA with no slow downs.

I played Mass Effect recently with AA on, have ati 5870 and had pretty new drivers in when I played it.

To put AA on I had to rename an exe, the path for me was F:\Mass Effect\Binaries , renamed to UT3.exe (not to sure what I renamed, but it wasnt the config launcher but the other game start up in there). Steam should have it too, create a short cut to that exe once you have renamed it so games boots up through that and not anything else, steam might use the launcher.

Then in the ati control panel make sure Catalyst A.I is enabled and on standard, then put what level of AA you want in 3d. You have to rename the exe and the A.I on for it to work. I was Jaggy free :D

Do you have to switch it on and off after each game? Nvidia lets you set up profiles but I couldnt find anything similar for ATI?

Unfortunately, if you have to force AA through the control panel you have to switch it on and off depending on what your playing and wanting it on, I think you can make profiles or something but I'm not sure. I Don't mind using the 3d setting.

edit: Just to be clear the whole renaming the exe is just for this game, something to do with the UT3 engine and catalyst A.I was the work around to get AA on.

You've hit upon a good point there. When I've read reviews about ATI and using AA in games, the general consensus is that they perfom well. In my experience though, not always but usually, when AA is applied the frames tend to drop quite noticably. This, of course, does vary from game to game. Some games it's fine but others very hit and miss. At very high resolutions they tend to hold their own rather well but very few play at 2560x1600.

The fps when I applied / forced 'box' AA in ME was fine but it certainly wasn't as stable as I would have expected. My quad atm is only running at 3.0 so maybe that might play a part, not sure. I usually find 3.0 ample for single player games anyway.
