Mass Effect 2 on the PS3

Graphics are decent on the character models but apart from that, xbox looks loads better. Especially the case on Overlord where the ground is horrible blocks.

I thought the PS3 version ran the Mass Effect 3 engine, so surely the graphics should be upped compared to Xbox? Cant comment on the Xbox version though, it just seems logical it would be a step up...

Do I need to have played the first Mass Effect to understand Mass Effect 2?

Nope but it definitely devalues the overall experience. You won't get all the references to your choices from the first game, the crappy comic skips out on a lot of stuff. I thought it would be more in-depth than it actually is.

On the plus side, at least your choices from the second will carry over into the third.

Nope, but hopefully it'll happen soon to give me an excuse to get rid of it. Game is garbage :(

Thank god for that, thought I was the only one that hated it. Gutted really, I was looking forward to it, but didn't enjoy it at all.

Has anyone experienced the save-game bug on the PS3?

Apparantly some people have experienced a bug in which your save game will randomly disapear

They patched the main bug which was causing save corruption shortly after launch.

BUT the save system is inherently flawed and something I seriously hope they fix for Mass Effect 3. Each of the character's saves are stored within a single system save file - so despite it appearing in game that you are making saves to separate slots, they are infact all going in this single file including the auto save.

So what happens is that if you get any kind of lock up while making a save, or more likely as the game is auto saving (which it does often), the end result is the file is corrupted loosing all progress for that character. If they had made it so that each in-game save was actually a separate save file on the system (like 95% of games!) they wouldn't have had half the save game problems as they have had, so you could have at least fallen back to a previous save had you suffered save corruption.

The best thing to do is just take a regular backup of the save to a USB stick. Despite this flaw, the game itself is fantastic.

It’s not perfect, the saves have to be done manually, but it works even on protected saves (such as Mass Effect 2 if I recall).
It was £39.99 for a year when I signed up, but I got a couple of £20 PSN Cards for about £17.50 each and used those, so you can always save a few quid that way. There is a 3 month sub, but I have no idea how much that is.

That's not what it told me when I went to copy my ME2 save to a usb stick?!

edit: unless they removed the protection since then on account of the bug?...

No, you're right one of the saves does have copy protection. The game has a general settings save which is copy protected (probably because it also tracks trophy progress in this save).
There is then an additional save file (which is effectively the main save) for each character you create. These are not copy protected so can be freely copied where ever you please. This is the file which is at risk of corruption and loosing all your progress so is the one you'll want to backup.

Holy thread revival etc... :p

Firstly, I wrote a post out, then I read it back and realised it was about half a page long so I'll just sum up my thoughts in bullets instead:

Pros:
  • Good graphics and sound (mainly).
  • Biotics were fun to use.
  • Squads are easy to command.
  • Story was enjoyable.

Cons:
  • Game gives an illusion of depth but turns out to be quite shallow.
  • Audio was often out of sync with video in cutscenes.
  • Hammerhead missions.
  • Missions had a feeling of repetitiveness.
Now I don't mean to be super negative, I played the game for 40 hours from start to finish so it couldn't have been *that* bad but I was left feeling a bit disappointed. Firstly, the RPG mechanics weren't very deep at all, I spent the vast majority of my time trying to earn upgrades for the ship which seemed to do sweet F.A, in fact I believe the only reason you need to upgrade the ship is to determine who lives and dies in the final mission, something which frustrated me greatly as I like to try and get as many trophies in the first playthrough as possible. Miranda died in the very last cutscene when leaving the Collector ship which was frustrating as Hell because I'd worked hard to keep her alive the entire time, yet I was cheated out of the trophy by something that was completely out of my control.

Those Hammerhead missions as well, I mean what a joke! It can withstand harsh winter planets, it can withstand the hottest planets in the universe, but it can't withstand a handful of bullets without bursting into flames. On the flipside though turrets and mechs can withstand a barrage of rockets perfectly fine. Also, when I said that the game lacked depth what I meant was it seems like a very dumbed down experience. The galaxy map gives you a vast amount of planets to discover but the majority of them don't offer anything apart from a quick ride in a Hammerhead in order to earn resources for useless upgrades. The weapon upgrades often felt useless to me as my enemies were also levelling up at a similar rate, so I'm upgrading my weapons while they are upgrading their ability to take more punishment, it never felt like I was progressing unlike Fallout 3 where I could feel my character becoming more powerful and more proficient with weapons yet the harder enemies always provided a challenge. This just feels like I haven't made any progression at all.

The main missions all felt a bit samey as well, about halfway through I really wanted to stop playing as it was just an endless, repetitive cycle of bringing up the galaxy map, landing on a planet, running up to someone, engaging in a boring conversation with them in which 99% of the time the game made it completely irrelevant which reply you gave as the conversation would still lead to the same conclusion anyway, then you get to fight a few waves of enemies in some drab location. I'm struggling to think of a single mission that stood out for me, and considering I've only just finished the game this evening and the 40 hours of play is spread over the past few days that's really saying something.

...and for some reason it won't give me the trophy for keeping all my team alive during the 'suicide mission' even though I did keep them all alive.

Did you go through the Omega 4 relay right away to save Yeoman Chambers et al. Maybe they count towards that trophy?
