I've created this thread to gauge peoples love for the Mako exploration in Mass effect 1.

It was removed from Mass effect 2, and although the ability is coming in the form of DLC, Its felt the reasoning for removing the Mako was peoples lack of love for it in Mass Effect 1.

I'd like these to be the possible poll answers

I enjoyed Exploring using the Mako
I hated Exploring using the Mako
I hated the controls for the mako but enjoyed exploring
I hated the controls for the mako and hated exploring

This. I'm using a keyboard and mouse which obviously isn't ideal, but the missions were boring, they really detracted from the scale of the main environments and grandeur of the main story, I'm playing through ME1 at the moment before I tackle 2 and I'm ignoring these missions this time.

In fairness, I appreciate the effort they put into the different solar systems and such, it increased the sense of scale and space that you were covering in the Normandy, I can't see how they could have included other planets without there being lots of inexplorable ones or it similar being a lot of effort to planet hop all the time, getting the balance right and including a large variety of planets and then incorporating them into the main story would be very difficult.

Exploring with the Mako felt like a grind to me, I think what they've done in ME2 is MUCH MUCH better.

The controls were awful and the vast majority of exploring was rubbish. I say vast majority as the vast majority was copied and pasted terrain with a different texture. The areas where the Mako was used in a mission were much better so some better thought out maps for it would be what i'm after in ME2.

Its definitely better in some ways but i just can't say its 'better'.

The MAKO, it was fun to drive and when there was a point to using it, it was fun to use imo but the endless exploring of the same dull planet was completely dull.

However that being said, im not a fan of the scanning and probing in ME2, and tbh it was a bit anal to use (pardon the cheesy pun). Its still repetitive and boring when you get right down to it.

They each have their pros and cons, the MAKO imo was more 'fun', the scanning was more 'streamlined' imo. I just hope that for ME3 that they come up with a nice and easy way to gather resources/explore.

Either way when i was exploring the galaxy using both methods in me1 and me2 they were both just a complete chore. Bioware, take note :).

Difficult question. Didn't mind the mako parts...till it got very repetitive. But don't think I was ever as uninterested as I was mining for resources. Probe away, launching probe, probe away...GAH!

Enjoyed exploring with the Mako.

It's a darn sight better then dull as hell, replayability killing forced planet scanning, which means I cba to play ME2 more than 2 times. I played ME1 to the death for max achievements and never once got bored.

it's a big miss for me. from driving around on the moon

to finding the weird animals like the shifty looking cow that stole your money if you turned your back on it

or the the large shiny floating orb

along with many others.

i find my only fault with 2 is not being able to explore in the Mako.

I thought that the Mako was fun to explore in. The problem was the incredible dull planets you got to explore. They all looked like they'd been randomly generated.

I certainly didn't mind exploring with the Mako. Some of the worlds could have been much more interesting though. I'd take the Mako over plannet scanning which is by far the dullest thing in ME2, I absolutely detest it.

I didn't have a problem with controlling the Mako, or using it for combat in the main story.

I wasn't so keen on the optional drop missions though. However, I think that maybe this is more a failure of the worlds themselves than the Mako mechanic.

The worlds are all very generic, with just changes to terrain, colour, weather and hostility of the environment, which I guess is fair enough, as it would take ages to generate all those barren landscapes.

A large portion of these missions were you driving around on the surface to find a crashed probe, which you had to decrypt in order to find a lucky charm from a Salarian's cereal box.... BORING!

Then, there was very little combat on the actual surface of the planet. Off hand all I remember was the Thresher Maw level, and the fact it showed up in another level too. Then there was the moon base with the rockets, and a few other bases where there were some people outside.

The biggest failing though was that when you got to the missions and went inside, they all looked exactly the same. A box room, connected to a large box room, with two rooms that split off the end. That was shocking for a modern game.

To me, the combination of all of the above is what made the Mako missions extremely boring and I'm glad they changed it.

That said, the planet scanning missions in the sequel also get very tiresome.

I think, they need to come up with something better for the third game, based on the player feedback of the two.

I liked the controls and feel of the Mako. It had a 'weighty' feeling of inertia (which other people seem to describe as 'unresponsive') and it went where I wanted it too.

I also liked exploring, and it was atmospheric for the most part. It created a nice feeling of isolation, which was amplified when you hop out of the Mako and run around.

All of that said, it all got a bit tedious towards the end due to the lack of content (annoyances negotiating steep mountains didn't help either).

To summarise, I can see why they removed it for the sequel - but I'm disappointed it wasn't there in some capacity.
