Massive racket from GTX260 fan at start up

Hello everyone, ever since I built my PC almost 6 weeks ago I have been getting a more than audible noise (sort of slow spinning grinding noise) from the graphics card fan from my XFX GTX260 at startup.

This noise prompty dissapears after a few seconds after logging onto windows and doesnt even return even if I increase the fan speed using riva tuner. The noise doesnt occur when I restart the computer, but only after I left it off for more than an hour or so.

This is most puzzling and I wonder if the card may actually be damaged, which would mean returning it. I go to univeristy next week and I probbaly won't have time to RMA it.

Any thoughts?

Coulb be a fan bearing on a cold startup, is it possible before starting after a few hours off stop the fan when starting for a split second.

I did that this morning when i turned it on.

The "noise" goes away when I stopped the graphics card fan at start-up

Does that shed any light into the matter?

If thats the case, it seems you have a faulty / failing gpu fan.

But why does the noise go away gradually once the computer has been on, it makes no sense. Im moving away to university next week, need the PC so I'm not quite sure what to do.

Thanks for the help though, knew something was up, I should have sorted it out before going on holiday for 4 weeks!

As post no.2 says, most likely a cold start-up issue. I have a fan that does the same kind of thing. In the summer, no noise even at start-up. Soon as winter comes along with colder temps, it makes a grinding noise, which disappears after warming up.

I spent 30 mins tidying up the insides of my pc and used screws to screw in the graphics card instead of the PCI slot gate thing in my coolermaster elite 335 case.

So far no noise yet and pc seems to be working fine as of now.

kelticDaz, I think your right, it always goes away after a minute or two and only happens in the cold. I have a thermometer in my room saying 18 degrees.

Also there was no issues in mid summer when i built the PC, hopefully it isn't anything to worry about!

Check the clearance between the fan and the plastic shroud. I installed one of these for a friend and the noise when I turned the system on was unreal!

The fan was actually hitting the plastic shroud covering the card! I had to remove the shroud and install some plastic spacers to stop the fan hitting it.

I can confirm that the fan does hit the plastic covering of the card, but after tidying up the inside and dusting the card, no problems as of yet.

Will see what happens in a few days!

That really does confirm to me that XFX's quality control is shocking! I have no idea how they can let cards out the door in such a poor condition.

Disgraceful.
