Mastercard Securecode... meh

My brother is with Northern Bank, they have a little calculator type jobby, he has to type a pin into that to get another code to get into the internet banking part of the site. It all seemed a little bit overcomplicated to me, being even half intelligent with your important details removes any risk of account seizure or suchlike. It seems all these new measures are taking security to absurd levels.

If card holders want to be re-imbursed for fraud they should expect banks to make efforts to prevent fraud - you can't have your cake and eat it I'm afraid.

You also can't pay an old payee. Any online transfer requires your card reader. It's so bloody irritating, when I'm trying to transfer money to my girlfriends account.

Just logged in to nwolb and sent £71 to my hsbc savings account. I'm at work, my reader's at home. It only asks for my reader if I want to add a payee or set up a standing order.

Well said, although with the current trend we'll be forced to jump through 20 hoops just to order stuff online :(

It is upto the card issuer to allow you to skip or not - the form is loaded from their server and if they remove the skip option your screwed. The only option for the retailer would be to not go through 3D-Secure at all and thus lose their liability shift (similar to a shop using signature on a chip+pin card).

Maestro cards are mandated for 3D-Secure online, you cannot or at leats should not take them without 3d secure. Also many merchant agreements require the use of 3d secure online.

I have no problem at all with 3D-Secure, unlike the useless CVV (3 digits on back) it has the potential to stop fraud entirely online. What I don't like is the useless implementation the banks are doing - no publicity, no letters, no mandatory registration.

I mean, imagine a scenario where by chip+pin was introduced in the same way? One day you go into a shop and they ask you for a pin, you don't have one so they ask you to confirm your name and enter a pin.

To make this even more absurd, a criminal who has taken your card only has to provide your name (on the card) and dob (drivers license) to get your pin reset - all while stood at the checkout.

Sounds ridiculous but it's exactly what they're doing to 3D Secure.

What would the people who disapprove of the banks' attempts to provide extra security think if they logged on to make a payment and they couldn't because their account had been emptied?

I hate this new 'Verified by VISA' stuff, it needs capitals/non capitals and numbers! I forget it 9/10 times.

Is it so hard to think of a word, begin it with a capital letter and put a number on the end?*

* not a brilliant password but would satisfy the requirements

finally someone speaks sense, the car readers are just an extra security step, i think its great because its another level of security
