I'm thinking about replacing my GTX 970 in the not too distant future, but not the rest of my PC. Graphics card prices being what they are, I don't want to over spec the graphics card for my nearly three year old CPU.

Any suggestions on a good match for my i5 4690k @ 4.5GHz?

I game on a 2560x1080 144Hz monitor that has Freesync but adaptive sync isn't a big deal for me.

Thanks for any suggestions.
 
I have a horrible feeling that when Volta comes out people will tell me it's a waste with my current CPU and I need some form of lake to make it a worthwhile purchase. :)

I got five years out of my last motherboard and CPU (Jan 2010 - Jan 2015, AMD Phenom II 965BE) so that's my target for this one.
 
the 1070ti is due out in a few weeks, wait till it lands and see if it changes pricing of other cards.

the 1070 or vega 56 are the next logical worthwhile step for you at the mo, anything lower
is a bit of a sideways move.
 
A 1080ti would only be limited by your CPU in a very small number of games, so go for whichever GPU you want from 1070 upwards for a decent upgrade. Also worth considering a second-hand 980ti if you can get a decent deal.
 
980Ti second hand until we see what Volta brings to the table. Your CPU is still very capable. I did the same jump as you from a 970 up to a 980Ti and it was a hefty performance boost.

Yeah at 4.5GHz, should be fine with any GPU at gaming.
