The 106 gti does the same thing, and I'm pretty sure all of them have the guage. Ignition on two and you get level, then it drops after a few seconds and you get temperature. Did he not notice this?

yes all peugeots/renaults/citreons i have used (1990 to current)and been in have the dash oil guage, howwver once you start the engine some turn to oil temp some do nothing (xud's) and some turn to oil pressure

Got a pressure and temperature gauge on the 205 but nothing for the level.

Damage is most likely bottom end - big ends (which I changed on my 205 with the engine still in) and possibly mains. A new set of big ends is about £30 and a couple of hours on your back with a torque wrench.

I know the new E60 M5 has no dipstick....its drysump or something but the computer readout is supposed to be way off! a lot of them changing while driving.

No better way then checking the dipstick....what cant be right with that.

I think new Mercs will tell you if the oil needs topping up before it gets critical. They don't seem to have dipsticks anyway.

Yep, all new E-classes definately don't have a dipstick at all, you have to check the level with the computer when the engine's switched off.

In fact, about the only thing you can do yourself is fill up the washer fluid and top up the oil. Pretty much everything else is covered up.
