It always sounds like a good idea to skip steps as it saves time, but I've always found that working through every step means you make fewer mistakes.
Also if you end up with (cos(x))^2 = y then there are 4 values for x.
that depends entirely on the domain.
Hang on, I just looked up this core nonsense and it appears that you have had pure 1-3 split into core 1-4, meaning the same content but over more exams, and dropping a whole unit in the process (such as stats/mechanics 2).
Tell me I'm mistaken, as I can't believe they'd drop a whole unit and make it that much easier =/
