Maths help please...

Need some help ...

3(2s+5) +4(s-3) = 43

I have to work out what "s" is.. Can someone explain how this is done.

Expanding the brackets should make it a lot clearer

EDIT:

The way I read your post was that you dont want the question answered for you, just a nudge in the right direction.

Multiply out the brackets first so you get

6s + 15 + 4s - 12 = 43

Collect like terms

10s + 3 = 43

Subtract 3 from both sides

10s = 40

Divide both sides by 10

s = 4

LOL. I never did this at school but I did this last year for Uni. Its probably one of the more advanced mathematical "fings" I can do.

I have to say my father was useless as a maths help for homework. Not because he was crap but because he was brilliant at maths. He'd try and explain it and I'd end up with a headache. He read Stephen Hawking books and stuff and I think just couldn't simplify the maths for me to a level I could understand. :rolleyes:

But to be fair it's inevitable. If you don't need to use these things for your job then you aren't going to remember them. If I ever have kids I might be able to help them with their maths homework but I wouldn't have a clue when it came to something like english.

You really should have done this at GCSE? I remember starting this sort of stuff at primary school, so I've no idea how you'd get away without even being force fed it! :eek:

Not really, I've got by for 39 years without knowing so I'm sure I'll survive another night.

Must suck to be an arrogant individual who thinks a parent must know everything and shouldn't ask for help when they themselves are stuck.

The only maths I remember is the fundamentals, basic algebra, trigonometry and percentages/fractions because they are the only things I use day to day

I would be stuffed if I had a kid that wanted help with their maths homework tbh!
