The only maths I remember is the fundamentals, basic algebra, trigonometry and percentages/fractions because they are the only things I use day to day :)

I would be stuffed if I had a kid that wanted help with their maths homework tbh!

Yep.. I seriously don't remember doing this sort of algebra when I was doing my CSEs.. I was only in set 3, so maybe it was something that was covered in the ) level syllabus at the time.. Things change.

Guys, instead of posting for help on the forum, direct everything to Calder's trust, because by the sounds of things he can answer anything!

LOL

I'm glad to see one I could have answered, most of them I stride over to thinking 'Maths used to be my best subject, this will be no problem!' and then I look at and think 'huh?'.

The amount we forget is terrible. I'm trying to get more maths into my job, to make it better.

@Admiral Huddy - Thanks for that 'Interview Guide'. I used it to successfully evaluate someone interviewing for a junior position. He starts next Wednesday :D

my dad's a math genius, shame it doesn't run in the family :(

Hehe same here, my dad is brilliant at maths...guess thats why he became a mech engineer lol:p. But i remember back at school, i was never any good at maths...in fact i was freakin terrible ie algebra and fractions used to get on my wick. But bless my dad he used to spend most of the night trying to explain how he got this and that number:p. Sadly it never helped because i was still **** at school.

My 2 bros are much better at maths than i am...i feel sorry for my kids when they will ask me for maths help...im gonna look like an idiot really :o

No worries.. ;)

..and thanks everyone for the help.. i got it sussed pretty quickly once i read through this thread. I don't pretend to know too much about maths. In fact I'd go as far to say i'm pretty poor but I've been working as a programmer for 20 years in a City bank, so I guess I've not missed having the knowlege. That is until your kids ask :o I enjoy learning new things, even if it's stuff that 12 year olds are learning at school. Be pretty boring if we knew everything.

Must suck when your 12-14 year old son asks for help with his maths homework and you have to come on a forum to find out how to do it.

Too true. It's just embarrassing really. Poor kid's gonna lose respect for his dad.

yeah? Know that for sure do we? You know everything, including how to be a parent.. You have a big shock comming.

I'd rather know a little about something and learn then a **** that thinks he knows everything that actually knows nothing!

Ridiculous.

How can a parent know everything? They can't. At least AH could admit that he didn't know something and then went off and found out the answer. Fair play to him, it takes a lot to admit that you don't know something, especially (I would think) to your child.

Anyway, maths isn't everyone's 'cup of tea' - I'm sure there's many things that AH knows that you and me don't - everyone's got their specialist area(s).

Yes, but this is basic knowledge, not a specialist area. I know I would be embarrassed if my father had less mathematical knowledge than an average 11 year old.

I'm not having a go at Huddy in particular, just at the way basic education no longer seems to be important. :(

I would imagine (I may be wrong here) that either Huddy didn't learn these things back in school (not sure when quadratics came onto the National Curriculum) or he learnt them and has since forgotten them due to never having had cause to use them.

I'm sure your not..

I don't do embarrassment. If I don't know something, I admit it. Otherwise, conversely what sort of message would that give out to my kids.

I certainly don't remember covering this 20+ years ago when I was at school and I've got on fine without knowing. Maybe I did and forgot.. I don't know. I know for certain that my kids don't think less of me for not knowing.. On the contrary, we sat down on Sunday for an hour or so going through her stuff. There are parents who wouldn't even bother.

I doubt it. Huddy's an ace bloke and it'll take more than that for his kid to lose respect for him.

You know what is embarrassing to see? People who criticise others over the knowledge they have but the other person doesn't. I'm sure Huddy knows how to do things which are basic to him, that you have no idea about.
