Amusingly there seem to be people on twitter claiming "BODMAS" (or PEDMAS etc..) and getting different answers.

Special needs - pictures provide a high level of stimulus and reduce the chances of me being distracted by external stimuli.

Remembering that in the order of operations M and D are equal, as are A and S, so any ambiguity there returns you to the order they're written

That's because things like BODMAS are just conventions for getting the 'right' answer to a sum created with it. If you use a different convention to the puzzle setter you are likely to get a different answer.
For example the UK and US generally use different conventions for many things so it's likely a calculator or spreadsheet program targeted at different countries will get a different result. Your answer should probably confirm the rules used to prioritise the operations.

B O DM AS - if (D and M) or (A and S) follows each other, the left-most operation in the equation is always carried out first.

Therefore:
8 / 2 x (2+2) =
8 / 2 x 4 =
4 x 4 =
16

Looking at the twitter post it seems a lot of the confusion stems from people who 'do the brackets' as you show, versus those who 'eliminate the brackets' and so interpret the 2(4) as having the priority of brackets too.

Looking at the twitter post it seems a lot of the confusion stems from people who 'do the brackets' as you show, versus those who 'eliminate the brackets' and so interpret the 2(4) as having the priority of brackets too.

Anyone interpreting 2(4) as having the same priority as the content of the backets (i.e. above exponents) is a bit of a numpty.
