Hi all, i was looking to find out the engine number for my car engine as was trying to buy the right timing belt kit for my car....
and came across a maths question lol. Just wanted to check with you brainy people my calculation.

if for example my engine number is 20AD2770....for an opel astra....1.8 sri 2002 model....

according to this article above....they say the last 6 digits are the serial number....

so if the first engine made at the plant was numbered 000001....and then they labelled the 1,000,000th engine A000001....
and then when they got to A99999, the next one was labelled B000001.....
and so on...
i calculated my engine to be the 3632770th made at the plant?

thanks in advance! :)

My calculation is as follows:
So the 1,000,000th engine would be A00001, After which you only need to go up to 99,999 before you get the next letter. So B-Z are 100,000 engines each.
So at AA0001, the total number of engines produced is 3,500,000.

For the second letter they now increase after every 9,999 engines. So A-D is an extra 10,000*4=40,000.

At AD0001 total engines produced is 3,540,000

That would put your engine as the 3,542,770th produced at the plant.

I think :D

Hi thanks for the reply.....
i got to Z00001 being the 3,500,000th engine produced? i'm so bad had to do it on a spreadsheet lol

You are correct, AA0001 should be 3.6 million produced. I'll check the rest my calcs in the morning.

I think you should only be adding 99,999 for each row in your spreadsheet because there is no zero numbered engines.
According to the link, the numbering would go:
A99998
A99999
B00001

Ah yes didn't think about that....so can start with deducting 25 (26 letters of the alphabet)? then would need to take into account when it changes to AA then AB.....
