Maths Question

The formula is was certainly tought to me at GCSE level, I'm sure of it.

fair enough just checked the books, it is there.

Perhaps this shows the failings of our educational sytem?

Anyhow, like i said, just cause he doenst know something, doesnt mean he should be shot for asking for help - not exactly a nurtuing environment now is it.

Oh, and to the guy doing Ad. Maths - It's not too bad. Learn the sine, quadratic and cosine rules off by heart cause you don't get a forumla sheet for it.

Sohcahtoa...wait, isn't that something to do with triangles. :(

i think he meant the stuff like

sina/a = sinb/b = sinc/c

and a2 = b2 + c2 - 2bccosa

something like that, never actually used those htings EVER.

Soh cah toa is used for the sine, cosine and tangent formula triangles. :)

Sin theta = opposite/hypotenuse, cos theta = adjascent/hypotenuse, tan theta = opposite/adjascent. :)

It's different to the sine and cosine rules, which require different numbers to be plugged in, and they are totally different to soh cah toa formula triangles.

Yeah I mean those! I remember a lot of questions involving the cosine equation - so make sure you can get it right both ways - working out the length of a side with the other two lengths and angle in between, and working out an angle when you have all the side lengths.

What rubbish, I did my GCSEs five or six years ago, I don't remember any of the stuff I did then - does that mean the education system is failing? No - I simply don't need any of the stuff I was taught anymore.

those require numbers to be subbed in too?

or perhaps he meant

sinx = x - x^3/3! +x^5/5! - .. + (-1)^r x^(2r+1) / (2r+1)!

cosx = 1 - x^2/2! + x^4/4! - ... + (-1)^r x^2r / 2r!

something like that anyway..
thank god all this stuff is in the formula book at a2, id have so failed otherwise cause i could never be bothered to learn formulas lol

which could be a failure, in a sense, of the educational system. taught superfluous & irrelevant knowledge :P
and i meant that he wasnt taught that/did lower gcse/whatever

it wouldnt be a failure of the system, if you forget something... ?

Hate writing out anything related to maths on computers, readability goes down the drain.

But yeah I know the quad formula, sine and cosine rules :).

It's things like kinematics which get me. But my real problem is time. I always have been slow in exame, often don't finish and nearly always am working to the last minute. So with only the hour and a quarter I was really rushing (despite knowing we weren't expected to finish). And rushing = mistakes (little things like confusing positives/negatives).

Eh? It's not irrelevant knowledge, just knowledge that I personally do not need anymore. He might have been taught that, just doesn't remember it.

How is it a failure of the system? If anything, it's a failure of my memory.

isnt the gcse like 3hours long? anyway, the old adage practice makes perfect is apt here

Chill out guys. He's obviously just forgotten how to solve quadratics. It's not going to ruin his life or anything! Incorrect grammar on the other hand...
MuvverRussia actually rounded one of his solutions to x incorrectly, but no-one's spotted that yet. :)

did you not read the last line of my sentence?

He may/may not have been taught it, the issue isnt at debate here. The point was not to make him feel like an idiot for something that he didnt know, regardless how simple it is.

Your writing is so confusing I didn't know what to make of it.

Of course it is at debate, you're debating it!

GCSE Calculator and Non-Calculator are 2 hours, Additional Maths (not a GCSE) is also 2 hours ;)

What is this Additional Maths?

When i did it, it was just noncalc & calc with differnet levels like higher etc
