Brain being dumb. What is the shorthand notation for addition of number to itself multiple times?

For multiplication it's obviously powers;

a * a * a * a * a = a^5

what is

a + a + a + a + a = ?
 
wow, OcUK forums mustve hit an all time low with these maths questions. I would understand an equation like a quadratic or sine cosine or tangent equation is difficult. But how could you not get this wrong? :eek:

I think everybody's brains just turns to mush after a while...

Ah, you might be right there. I haven't done any mathematics for about 8 years and I thought it would be a good idea to look at Eudoxian theory. Fail.
