Problem maths is very large topic. He also said his interest in ML.
I am giving him areas to focus on, if you don't know the ML context you could be spending time in areas that have little impact..

Websites offer better information than books. For Basic ML stats, YouTube are the best.

There's the Cambridge International books which are decent and used for school, AS and A-level etc:
* Pure Maths 1, Pure Maths 2 & 3
* Probability & Statistics 1
* Mechanics

Left field recommendation - I am nearly finished at the Open Uni with their maths degree and the books are outstanding quality, with a route to start from only a GCSE level knowledge.

Textbooks can be picked up on ebay etc - I reiterate, they are by far the best resources for teaching/learning maths I have seen (having completed three degrees and being an experienced maths teacher!)


The module "MU123 - Discovering Mathematics" would be a great place to start.
 
Not maths specifically, but I have found AI assisted learning very good, find a decent program of training and use the AI to assist with deeper understanding.

I recently had to relearn SQL for a new job role, I had previously learnt SQL in collage 28 years ago! I found using AI along with the refresh material I picked up online very helpful.

Blimey! Thank you all so much. There is a lot in this thread to digest. I think the best idea for me is to do a general maths course at A-level grade and then once I have a basic understanding specialise on different parts of maths for my specific interests.
