36 people have died as fires rip through the island of Maui. Caused by strong winds fanning the flames.

Thousands evacuated as a state of emergency is declared.

The before and after images are pretty shocking.

I expect we will see a lot more events like this in future.

"Climate change isn't real"

"And even if it is, it's not man made."

"And even if it was man-made, what about China!

"And even if they are supposedly getting on top of that, what can I really do?"

Sadly, acccording the Govenor speaking to Wolf on CNN, he has stated the death toll will rise now search and rescue and helicopters are getting to areas :(

I know it's stupid but why don't we use thermobaric bombs on fires?
Assume cost, also how does it work in a populated area with people still around?
Not to say it can't be done, https://warontherocks.com/2018/08/shocking-wildfires-into-submission-a-proposal/ apparently Swedish airforce used a bomb to quell a fire, which appeared to certainly work around the 'explosion' site

Yep very bad this year.
A real combination of perfect circumstances. :(
The grass just goes up like a ...I'm not sure of a good analogy.
Hopefully rebuilding lives and the town is possible.

Well obviously not populated areas, but before it gets to that point it is surely an option no?

Doesn't quite need to be MOAB levels of expense either I would assume.

Using one to starve a fire of oxygen is a good idea but the blast radius and shockwave the bomb makes would be bigger than the radius of the fire/oxygen consumed by it and generally they don't really work as well at removing oxygen in wide open spaces like forests etc vs smaller enclosed ones like in cities/towns/buildings/caves etc.

For smaller isolated fires explosions have worked really well (oil wells are a real-life example) but when it comes to a wildfire there's not a great deal of "new" stuff being invented as good old fashioned water & suppressant (ground/air delivered) and firebreaks seem to work as the best Value For Money fire suppression system, even if it gets overwhelmed at times like in Maui unfortunately.

This is horable, hopefully they have donation spots in the UK. Plus, I hipe the people in the UK are better than the majority in the US, before we moved here to NY state (god I miss the thunderstorms in the Midwest) I posted a link to help Haiti lots of people put hateful replies. Ironic how the Republicans hate immigrants when this country was settled by them. Well ok, they are ok with the white ones.

Have to say I really don't understand some of the stuff coming out as to complaints about tourists, in fact some of it seems infantile.

I do get that a terrible tragedy has occurred and tourists need to be respectful of the situation, should expect and might need to alter some plans/activities and avoid partaking in spectating/gawping around the disaster kind of stuff but some of the rest of the complaints I find weird.

Well very likely any rebuilding will be done for the benefit of tourists rather than residents, impossible not to be angry even if tourists disappearing would mean destitution.

Plenty of native outspoken Hawaiians have been begging tourists not to come to the islands for years, I imagine it's not easy to see them still enjoying their vacations while their homes are lying in ruins. That and I'm sure the islands are having to stretch their resources to accommodate mostly tourists atm.

I've got a friend who I try to take no notice of but he is completely down the CT rabbit hole with everything.
Here's his latest:
Those fires are not normal. Couldn’t give a poo if anyone calls me a conspiracy theorist. Look into it (not on TikTok). Exactly the same patterns as the California paradise ‘fires’ a few years ago. Pure land grab by the elite. Global ‘boiling’ my arse.

it's a tough one..... I would feel terribly guilty of I was there but it's not like you can get your money back if you CHOOSE not to go on holiday to an undamaged part of an island. maybe some people will have paid their life savings for their once in a lifetime break, it would be a hard call to just write it off.

in truth I went on holiday to South Africa once. probably never again because as nice as it was I don't go on holiday to feel shame.....and yet how can you not when you are in altra 5* accomodation but across the road out of the complex of people are in shanty towns

I guess Hawaii would be a bit like that now. and the locals can chunter at holiday makers all they want but without them Hawaii is going to be in an even bigger mess if they lose that income.
(this totally does not excuse rubber neckers however)

Lots of nimbyism there (and angry farmers, apparently one reason for not releasing water earlier was "has farmer X been consulted first and does he agree")... perhaps an emergency isn't the best time for community building and togetherness and listening to each other's lived experiences etc.

One of the natives was in charge of water, seems to be very "woke" and managed to screw up the response to the fire as a result! Here he is waffling about equity and some woo beliefs re: water:
