The other sad thing is there were some kids sent home from school who may not have had adults at home + there was some mention of elderly/care homes... that always has the potential to be a bit grim in an emergency if the staff have been like "screw this, I need to rush back to my family". There was a nursing home in Louisiana for example where 35 residents drowned in Hurricane Katrina because they weren't evacuated.
All the other islands are undamaged so not really a huge issue in going on holiday, might be worth checking re: this island in particular. Obvs if they need boats etc.. then having them used on the same island for snorkeling or sightseeing trips
I suspect people going to Hawaii will just not post pics on facebook or instagram lest they be judged by someone who reads the little Instagram msgs put out by celebrities "native Hawaiians have been telling people not to come" etc. in reality it's not the full picture and it's always popular to relay activist type messaging.
Ultimately unless it's somehow going to get in the way of emergency services and the national guard from responding I don't see the issue with tourists still coming in general, if they're dumb enough to visit the actual area of the fire then they ought to be arrested.
it's a tough one..... I would feel terribly guilty of I was there but it's not like you can get your money back if you CHOOSE not to go on holiday to an undamaged part of an island. maybe some people will have paid their life savings for their once in a lifetime break, it would be a hard call to just write it off.

A food truck owner on Maui said it's irresponsible for people like Jason Momoa to tell tourists the island is closed because local businesses that weren't destroyed are now struggling too
Maui food truck owner Daniel Kalahiki said Lahaina is closed but small businesses on other parts of the island still need tourism business.

"Lahaina's closed. We grieve for them, we cry for them, we do everything we can for them, and it will never, ever be okay or be the same," Kalahiki said, adding the only people who should be in Lahaina are residents or those who are rebuilding. "But we still need the rest of the island to be open so we can continue to live."
He said most of Maui still needs and wants tourists to come.
"Kihei, Wailea, open. Wailuku, Kahalui, open. Paia, Haiku, open. Hana, open. All of those places are still open," he said. "All of those local businesses — hundreds of local businesses that depend on at least a little bit of tourism, as do I. Although my business is based on locals, I still need that little bit of tourism."
Kalahiki said in another video that what he feared was already becoming reality, adding that people all over Maui were being financially impacted, even losing their jobs or businesses, because people are telling tourists to stay away or confronting the ones who are already there.
He mentioned several celebrities and prominent figures that he thought were acting irresponsibly by telling people not to come, including Momoa.
