I was just wondering if there was a site that gave you a good reading of the max strength broadband that my phoneline could take?

My current provider say that I can get upto 3mb. Is this just with them or with all providers?

I am about 1.5km from the exchange.

Thanks

If your current ISP suggests 3mb is the max your line can take it's likely the max you'll get from any ISP apart from Cable providers. All ADSL ISPs are reliant on BTs "Last Mile" which is the copper wire connection from your house to the exchange. If this is poor then no matter which ISP your using the speed won't be great. 1.5km will be as the crow flies and is often therefore incorrect as pretty much no phone lines will take a straight line from your house to the exchange.

If you can access your line details (Via your Modem or Router) to tell us your SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) and line attenuation we can probably tell you if your line could maybe support a bit more but currently sounds like your limited to 3mb.

Where do i find the SNR? I have a netgear G834DT (I Think) router.

Is there anything I can do with the router to inprove the speed. I used to have slightly faster speeds on my modem before changing to router, i thought it would have been the other way around.

Connect your modem/router to the master socket, buy a good filter, offer up small furry animals as sacrafice to the DSLAM gods. SamKnows will give you an indication of your line potential but again it's only an indication and your ISP will normally be pretty accurate.
