Max Payne. The Movie

I too was unlucky enough to see an advanced screening and it is utter rubbish. It takes ages to get going, doesn't really follow the games story at all (instead makes up it's own lame spin on it), and the action with the exception of one short scene is uninspiring. The one time they actually got close to using bullet time they ruined it and it made no sense.

If you want the Max Payne experience in movie form then watch Sin City and and, to a lesser extent, Payback.

The Anime Street Fighter 2 movie was epic, you also got to see Chun Lis' boobs.

You had to have the uncut version for that. ;) :p

They did indeed mess with the plot, why is Jim Bravura black and played by a rapper :(

I'm going to cry in the corner now.

Not the worst film I've seen, but its a bit meh.

oh, and everytime Mona Sax spoke, I wanted to say "shut up Meg" ;)

Well the people staring in Prison Break + Heroes had to do something while their series was off the air!

Utterly crap film if you ask me.

Hmm well where to start... this post will contains spoilers so if you read it and see something you didn't want to then I did warn you.....

Firstly I think people are being overly harsh of this this film, while it certainly will not be winning critical acclaim anytime soon for a game to film conversion it not actually too bad and is a better than some others I have seen *cough*doom/street fighter*cough* I felt for the first 2/3's of the film it really did capture the ambience of the game rather nicely, portrayed Max's character quite well (will come back to this) and in my opinion they were actually rather close to getting this to being a really good film.

However.... The story is rather disjointed, I don't see how they could have got it so wrong since the games had basically written the overall story for them (one in my opinion was actually pretty good), but never the less they decided key parts need to be re-written and and muck around with the timeline of the entire film. While no biggie if this was all I could have left happy knowing i'd seen an 'ok' film.

BUT they couldn't stop there for some reason they couldn't stop there <EPIC SPOILER COMING UP> apparently it seemed like a good idea towards the end to turn Max in to a junkie. At this point the film seems to dive quicker than a kamikaze pilot and loses any sort of credibility it might of had. I was left thinking 'you what' when it started kicking off my mate who I went just turned and looked at me as if to say 'is this for 'real?'

The action scenes as mentioned before are a bit un-inspired and hopefully some of the actors never get in front of a camera again. Come towards the end of this train wreck I wouldn't of been surprised if Peter Griffin had made a cameo to tell Meg to be quiet as Johno suggests.

In conclusion from the start you can see the potential the film has but they couldn't leave it be and had to put a spin on everything. If you like the game(s) I like I did I think you will be more disappointed than those that just watch it for a film in it's own right. It has the characters and the locations just fails to provide the goods.

3.5/10 for me :)

EDIT:// sorry if this is disjointed or doesn't make sense Im not very good at this sort of thing :)

Is this really that bad? Even if its for free?

ps3ud0

If you can go for free go see it, I have a cinema card so will go see literally anything within reason. I might of felt a little robbed if I had paid the 6.20 odd it is to normally get in.

I think I was more disappointed with the fact you could see the potential it has and then see them literally decide screw that and go to neverland with it. :)

Yep Ive got a cinema card - saves on actually having to make a choice, just see whats out usually...

<rant>

Surely the people who make these game movies should at least sit down and play the ****ing games? Its not like its going to take more than say a few days to get the idea of the whole thing.

Its like they go out of their way to do a bad job - I cant believe otherwise, else its obvious that the human race is doomed if we have such idiots out there...

Max Payne out of ALL the game movie tie-ins really needed to be respected, the game itself is like film noir - theres very little needed to do other than join the ****ing dots...

Well you would have thought they should have nailed this conversion. The story was basically already written for them through the game, and Sin City showed exactly how the noir style could have been carried off so it does beg disbelief how they ended up with what they did. Guess it's just the curse of the game to film conversion.

OT ps3ud0 your Sack Boy sig is a bit scary lol :D

Well you know what they say ;)

One, two, Sackboy's coming for you.
Three, four, better lock your door.
Five, six, grab your crucifix.
Seven, eight, better stay awake.
Nine, ten, never sleep again...

I was honestly expecting pure Sin City style darkness with commentary like the trailers led me to believe, the films done the game a great injustice!

I'm just going to refer to Mark Kermode - Computer Games make bad movies - it's a golden rule. The same is true the other way around - can you ever remember a truely good official computer game of a movie?

Resident Evil was only passable as it used Milla Jovovich as a distraction technique.

Golden Eye springs to mind. Terminator 2 on the megadrive. Revenge of the Sith on xbox.

Granted there's not loads, and I'm pushed to find recent examples, but they are out there.

I knew someone would bring up GoldenEye on the N64. From what I remember it was only loosely related to the film - most of the missions were just made up. On that basis I can nominate X-Wing Alliance and a random Star Wars film.

I think you're forgetting how much the game was based on the film. Golden Eye was the movie game and followed the same story as the film, with nothing more than the odd exception. If it didn't follow the story then they might as well of just called it "James Bond".

The Spiderman 3 game was pretty good.

No you can't, as X-Wing Alliance isn't really based on a specific Star Wars film. Golden Eye was the movie game and followed the same story as the film, with nothing more than the odd exception.

Surface 1+2, Statue Park, Frigate, Silo, Caverns, Control, Train, Bunker 1 +2, Jungle, Depot....

Off the top of my head :p
