Im thinking of upgrading my monitor from a 19" to something bigger. But ive only got a single card, so i cant go to big without a drop in performance. Whats the max size i should go, spec is below if it will help.

e6850
4gb ram
8800gtx oc2
vista 64 premium

24" (1920x1200) or a FullHD tv res would probably be the highest you'd want to go for. Maybe 1680x1050 too.(22")

There are higher like 2650x1600, but tbh thats a rubbish res, I mean you'd be forever buying new graphics cards and not being able to run games nicely without bumping down the res.

Go for a 24" I say :D

TBH that GTX will still cut it in a lot of games @ 1920x1200.

On top of that many of the newer screens have excellent non-native scaling so you could run at a reduced resolution with it still looking good.

I personally would not go back to a res lower than 1920x1200 - is wonderful for general windows use.

Only game my old GTX had issues with was Crysis which i reduced to 1440x900. As my Hyundai 24" was quite a new screen it still looked excellent.

The Dell is a very nice monitor, not the cheapest but its one of the best IMO.
The only thing i dont like is how much the IQ drops when running games at less then the native res, but i think all TFT monitors suffer the same.
Going from a 19 will be nice

I take it you aint ever played at that res then? I have used both a 8800GTX and a 3870x2 and both perform fine with all the bells and whistles at this res. The only game that struggles is crysis but then you can't blame a gpu on a badly coded game.
