Max safe temp for i5?

I've googled this quite a bit, and I've come across a lot of conflicting figures so thought I'd see if there was a better general answer here.

I'm well within whatever the answer the answer might be at the minute, but need a reference for when I decide to overclock this.

Also, what is the best software for stressing the cpu?

Thanks

At 3,800mhz and v1.3 my 750 gets to 69c with 4 cores loaded. That is about as high as I would want one to go but then I have only run that high for benching.

Under normal usage the highest I get to is about 50c.

I would say anything approaching 80c is near the limit.

I'd also say around 80-85C is the max safe temp. Personally like to keep it below 70 and at the moment I barely top 50 during gaming @4.2GHz :) Its just stability testing that raises it up

As for the best stress testing software I personally use Intel Burn Test. Run it at standard, 5 loops for a quick way of finding any problems. If it passes that then 10-20 loops on maximum just to make sure and stress the RAM too :p

Prime95 is a popular one too. I used to use it before I found IBT. Its does the job great, but can just take a hell of a lot longer to find errors. e.g. run prime for 2 hours then it fails, run IBT and it failed after about 40 seconds... much easier :)

Ok, I ran the Intel burn test on standard and was quite surprised that under full load the cpu hits 84C. Fair enough the heat dissapates very quickly as soon as the load falls, but I hadn't seen it over 70C before.

I suppose it's a rare enough thing for all 4 cores to be running full pelt. Something I should be worried about? After all that's only the cpu running at stock speeds.

Intel Burn Test is going to heat your CPU up way more than anything else. On mine its around 7C hotter on each core than when running Prime95, on my old E8400 it would be about 12C hotter.

But 84 does seem a lot for it at stock  this with just the stock cooler as well?

No, I'm using the Alpenfoehn Brocken cooler so I was expecting better. As I said it dissipates that heat quickly and within a few seconds of the cpu load being cut it's down to 40-45C. It idles around the 30C mark, so do those figures seem right?

Im using water cooling so cant compare directly sorry, but I know thats a decent cooler and at stock it probably shouldnt be reaching those temps! Maybe take it off and try re-applying the TIM and refit the cooler, it might just not be sitting too well on the chip or something

Ok, bit of an update on this one. Got myself GTA IV 'cos of the whole needing quad core to run smoothly thing I had heard, and used speedfan to record cpu temps during play. Bit disheartened by the fact the cpu seems to spend more time than I would like over 70C and even over 80C briefly on a couple of occasions.

I've checked the heatsink and it seems to be seated fine, the thermal paste has a decent spread and the heatsink fan spins up appropriately.

Does anybody have any other suggestions? I only used the thermal paste that came with the cpu cooler, so could I expect any improvement more than a few degrees using better stuff? Not only is this annoying me, but it has me a bit worried about shortening my cpu's life
