With Battlefield 3 coming out soon and my pc haing been easily OC'd and stable at 3GHz for the past 2 years i felt it time to OC it a bit more.

Currently I'm stable at 3.42GHz with idle temps of 36-40C depending on amibent temp and Vcore at 1.325. In P95 My core temps maximum is 66/66/63/62C on small FTT's and in IBT 77/77/73/73.

So I was wondering what the maximum I should go to temp wise to get the best OC without risking significantly shortening the CPU lifespan?

Also I'm not entirely sure how I should setup my RAM (timings, dram volts, maximum freq for overclock etc) I'm currently using 2*2gb of corsair xms2 and have a Asus P5Q pro mobo.

The q6600 is pretty much indestructible just try to keep IBT temps below 90c seeing how people have had these overclocked for years with even 1.55 volts through them not sure on that theory of load temps for stability testing shortening lifespan any proof of that ?

I've had my Q6600 B3 at 3.4GHz for a good couple of years and at 3.0GHz for the other two years before that. I got a TRUE when going to the higher frequency.

My temps have always been a bit on the high side, or at least perceived to be by others. With Core Temp, which gives a TJ Max of 85, I'm reading around 36 idle and up to around 75 under load (from memory). In reality these temps may actually be a bit higher as this is a relatively low estimation of TJ Max. Having said that, I did do some calibration which backs up these temp readings. Anyway, system is as stable as you like and is showing no signs of giving up, yet!

I remember a P5K / Q6600 overclocking / RAM tuning guide by someone named 'Clunk' which I found very useful. Maybe worth a google as I presume much would apply to you...

I wish I could get mine to even 3.0GHz, but I can't get it stable above stock :(
Really annoyed as I built a CPU only watercooling loop for it too (out of spare parts) so temps shouldn't be bad, but can't get it above stock otherwise it hangs (or at least the keyboard/mouse stop responding).

Krono5> Those are good temps buddy :-) In game's you are very unlikely to see temps are high as when you use prime95/IBT etc... even with the graphics card adding heat into the case. I'd be chuffed with those temps. It will likely last for many many years like this, especially given how low your Vcore is! :-)

Q6600 here at 3.4ghz for god knows how many years. I max out at 78C with all cores at 100% when i am encoding in premiere pro if that helps you.

Grown quite attached to this chip. She has served me well and at a nice overclock. Tempted to buy one of those i5 2500k's tho. They look to overclock like a beast and will certainly help out with my video encoding.

Another Q6600 owner here. Mines is clocked at 3.6Ghz and has been for around a year now.

1.4875V

1066Mhz memory.

I wont tell you the temps... they're not great!

However. It's never blue screened, never cuts out and is rock solid when encoding and gaming. So who cares how hot it is... I prefer not to look lol.

If it blows up (which it probably will lol) I'll get a new one :D

q6600 here on a p5ql pro. But mine seems to downclock once it gets to 65 degrees.

Never really understood it really. I have a noctua nh12 cooling it with two fans attatched, case temps are good also. But my VID is 1.325 so to get to 3ghz i have to use 1.4v

However its stable @ 2.8ghz on stock volts so im happy. Incidently ive been playing the bf3 beta, paired with a gtx260 @1680x1050 it runs quite well. Certainly playable.

Thanks for all the replies. I tried getting upto 3.5GHz but in the end the voltage increase was a bit too much and I still couldn't get it running stable maxing at 85C in IBT, so I reverted to 3.42GHz which I'm happy with.

Yesterday temps were 82c in IBT with 1.3325 Vcore which is definately stable now and it was 25C outside, maybe 28C+ in my room so it won't reach those temps again until next summer.

Funny this is stock voltage was 1.2350 iirc and I could get upto 3.2ghz on just 1.250, but the increase from 3.2 to 3.4 was huge in comparison and I'd probably need to go to 1.4ish for 3.6ghz which unfortunately my freezer 7 pro just can't handle and I don't consier it worth speding £60 on a Silver Arrow for 200mhz.

@TheCrow do you have LLC enabled as what you seem to describe is Vdroop which LLC counteracts.

How many runs of IBT do you need to do in order for it to be considered a stable overclock?
I've just done 10 runs of IBT (only using 1024MB memory as it fails instantly when I select to use more).
I ran at 3.2GHz (with 1.4v VCore, 1.33v under load) and highest CPU temp was 60/65ºC (depending on what software was used, or what TjMax was used), but the PWM (mosfets?) temp apparently went up to 73ºC (using an IP35 Pro).
