I keep experiencing delay write failures with this drive, though it only happens after transferring lots of data off/on it or for example unzipping/rarring a large file (say several GBs), I have a newer SATA2 version of the drive as well, but that one is completely fine.

The PC has 2GB RAM and I remember reading somewhere that it can cause this sort of problem, but the other drive seems fine, so I'm not entirely sure. I have 2 other Maxtors which are both IDE and they are both fine as well.

The strange thing is I don't seem to experience the problem in Win Vista, and only in XP, and I actually have to transfer stuff to/from there if I don't want to get the errors, where i have to reboot to stop the problems.

Could this be a problem with the drive itself, as I'm worried its about to fail, unfortunately its out of warranty with Maxtor so I can't send it back, or is it a problem with windows/other hardware?

Any ideas are much appreciated.

Delayed write failures are a fairly common sympton of a sick drive. Have a nosey around inside and check that the cables are still well seated then go grab the Maxtor diagnostics (link in the sticky).

Oh, and back it up now!
