Seen a 1.5TB Maxtor Basics external HDD for £115.

Are these drives reliable? Any reason for it being so cheap?

New Maxtors are just Seagates with a different label. I'd expect it to be fine.

Being a Seagate 1.5tb drive (the 7200.11 I assume) I'd expect it to break. There have been loads of problems with these from what I gather.

I had a no end of problems with my 1Tb basic drive.
It wouldnt work right if it was connected during booting (see maxtor sight for loads of complaints on their forums), and after having to plung and unplug it for a month the USB socket on the back of the drive snapped off.

My solution has been to hack it oepn and put the drive inside my case because I couldnt lose the data by returning it under warranty.

Lets just say I wont be buying another one.

Should have listened to OCuk! Bought one and it's duff. :(

Connected it first time and it works. Reboot PC, Windows reports drive to be 46GB. Reboot PC again, Windows reports drive to be 263GB. Reboot PC again, drive won't initialise. RMA time.

No wonder it was so cheap!

Probably an isolated incident. Get them to replace it! You might get a newer one back if it's old stock. :)

I thought the 7200.11 issue was a firmware problem? IIRC they fixed that with the 1.5tb version and the 7200.12s. I'm not aware of any other problems?
