I have recently purhcased a the above hard drive. I installed it the other day, formatted it and screwed it into the case.

However first of all, it makes a much louder noise compared to the other hard drives in the case, and seems to make the case vibrate quite a bit.

Secondly, windows will not boot for some reason. To explain; this new maxtor replaced an older hard drive. Since this new drive has taken its place, windows refuses to boot and i have to unplug another hard drive for windows to start. Very strange!

However it's more the first issue that is bothering me. It's just so much louder than the other drives in the case, which are Maxtors as well..... I haven no idea whether it's normal. So I don't know what to do about it, or if there is anything to do about. Just wanted people's opinions and advice in case anyone has the same hard drive or has the same issue.

Thanks in advance.

The drive is an IDE.... The thing is, the other maxtor's that I have are much quieter, so I have no idea why it is so loud in comparison. Could it be the bearings are not aligned properly?

In any case, it works so I have no way of returning it. However I guess for future reference, what can you recommend instead of Maxtor?

WD or seagates are reliable. it may be a noisey batch that your drive came from.

With regards to the boot problem - make sure you have got the jumpers correctly aligned on the drive for the postion on the IDE cable.

The boot problem is a strange one, as I have set the jumpers to cable select which in theory should sort itself out as far as I remember.

I will keep the Western Digital and Seagate in mind for next time. The noise is just quite bothering when it is on for a while, i have half a mind to return it anyways.

Thanks for the advice...
