Maxtor hard drives

I had an 80Gb hard drive from Maxtor with my first custom build on a KR7A-133, I eventually was pleased to see it go since it had a faint high pitched whistling during the times it wasnt in sleep mode. I recently got a 2nd hand Maxtor diamondmax, sort of an impulse buy, since it was brand new RMA; and £8 off retail or more depending on delivery.

I am noticing the same whine, this is kind of disappointing since I even want to upgrade my CRT (which has been fab during all my upgrades) due to a "mains hum" like noise.

Does anyone else find this with Maxtors?

Ive had no complaints with my wd caviar 120Gb 8Mb cache ide and my Samsung spinpoint 120s 200Gb 8Mb cache sata.

I honestly thought with the maxtor being built in Jan '06 that they wouldnt have the same noise characteristics of 5 year old models.

I've got an old diamondmax plus 9 that I bought 5/6 years ago and it is stilling running very nicely and I can't even hear it. But recently I was upgrading a system for someone and they bought a diamondmax plus 10...and let me put it this way...it sounded like it was already 10 years old with the amount of noise it was making, not to mention acting sluggish.

Maxtors 9 series were great hard drives. But the 10 series is responsible for the downfall of maxtor's sales because they have horrible build quality. I advise everyone to stay away from the maxtor 10 series. The next 11 series must be perfect if maxtor want to survive.

At the moment, Hitachi, Seagate and WD seem to be doing very well. Samsung too.

My diamond max 10 started off quite noisy and after a few weeks it started to die down and now I can't barely hear it.

So either I got used to the sound it or the usage broke it in.

Why don't you see about getting a hard drive enclosure as it might vibratations from the HDD to the case.
