Hi guys,

I've brought a cheap Maxtor external HDD (needed it to do some backing up quick)

The problem i have it when i when i try to open it it says i need to format the drive, but if i unplug it and plug it back in again then open it i can get the the stuff on it!??

Any ideas whats wrong?

:| u foooool take it back before its to late :'(

Ive had 3 maxtor internal hard drives die on me id be inclinded to presume their quality has never improved. The last poll done on hard drive failures showed maxtor to have like 75% of the forums hard drive failurse or somethign crazy like that.

As for your question, what format hav you actually put it in ?

haha. Belive me i would not have brough it if i had another option at the time! I've not formated it as it worked from the box.

From what you've said though, i might take it back and get my money back. I only really needed it for a short while so i could do a complete reinstall on both my drives.

try reformatting it. may fix your issue.

Well i cant say ive really looked into external hard drives, maybe they arnt bad. But personaly i shall never touch one again and enjoyed killing them with a hammer.

haha, no i think i'll take your first advice and get rid of it. I dont realy need it was only going to be a temp fix but i couldn't be bothered to take it back (how lazy is that i cant be bother to drive 10 mins to the shop!!, haha)

Thanks for the info.

no worrys, but my view is of corse very biased based on the fact of how many died on me :P I could just be unlucky... or maybe they just arnt waterproof. hahah jokes :p

so were mine, it would be silly to claim they all do. But out of all the hard drive failures i see, usualy maxtor. But maybe they cleaned their act up, ive been out the loop a long time.
