Hi everyone!

as mentioned earlier, im setting up a new rig and therefore require a dependable Harddrive.. ive narrowed it down to Maxtor Diamond 10 320gb (which is currently on special offer..sweet deal) and Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB. Which one should i go for and why? I do know what MAxtor offers 3 years warranty while Seagate is 5 years... any benchmarks or comparions? Durability?

cheers!

I'd go for the Seagate 7200.10 as it is faster. A lot of people will tell you that Maxtor are unreliable, I'm not quite so sure because based on personal experience they are fine but Maxtor do seem to have had a fair few problems while Seagate have had less. I don't know about sales figures and all the rest for a completely accurate comparison but whatever the result I'd still pick the Seagate for the speed. :)

It's only the recent Maxtors which have been pants DM9 and 10's as well as some Maxlines. Their server class drives are second to none - e.g. Atlas. I'd go for te Seagate for now. Until a proven new SeaMax drive is out, I'd stick with the best. It is likely that the 320GB DM10 is actually a SeaMax because I'd never heard of Maxtor doing a 320GB model until recently, but the 7200.10 is still my weapon of choice (perp recording). For what it's worth, Seagate are one of the oldest 3.5" HDU manufactuers and I believe they first introduced the 3.5" drive back in the 80's. They are probably also one of the biggest in terms of production and sales too - Maxtor were alright, but considering the fact that Seagate just went in and bought them says something to me.

I love that song! Maybe Hitachi should ship all their drives with this file on the HDU... :D

Recent maxtor? Dunno. Where i work (school) we replaced about 18 of em so far in the last 2 summers, RM machines with 20GB models. Same chassis with Seagates and WD drives have had about 3 fails in the last 2 yrs and we prolly have more of those than Maxtor...hotter running ad whe it warms up and some idiot kid turns off the aircon they fry, but other brands are reliable in the same conditions so i dunno looks kinda bad lol.

Had a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 200GB PATA that packed in on me without any warning, I won't be buying another Maxtor in a hurry.

On the otherhand, Ive had 2 Seagate Barracudas 7200.7 SATAs running for the last 2 years, and not the slightest issue with them, at the moment Seagate Barracudas get my vote. :)

I've had problems with recent Maxtors, including reliability and compatibility with some SATA chipsets. I've had a few Seagates and they are fast becoming my preferred make.
