Hi my MSI 290x gaming edition has gone to the GPU heaven in the sky, bought 2nd hand its deff died or dying.
Any way i want to order a card today for max £300, now for the last 4 years ive been amd i mainly play Battlefield games and the advantage of AMD is Mantle.
But i am prepared to go Nvida but need advice, on the 290x front i could get the same MSI card again as its much cheaper now £275 or the Tri-x £300 but can people give me advice either card like 970, vrm issues etc i need advice in the next couple of hours as i would like to order for delivery tomorrow.
Thanks

check the following review..

It wll give you an idea of which card is best for you. I'd go for an 8gb 290X like this..

Just out of interest what is wrong with you 290X? Are you sure its faulty?
Hi yeah deff faulty its been playing uop for weeks i have it water cooled with a kRaken i kept getting lock ups black screens corrupted screens even sometimes i couldnt get to windows i have tried everything driver and hardware wise as i build pcs and afraid its a no go :( thanks for the advice people

I would vote for the 780Ti over the 970.

It is simply a better quality/built card as it was proper high-end, rather than a mid-range card being branded as mid-high end.

While most people will tell you that the stuttering issue occur only when the 970 vram usage exceeding 3.5GB, there are people who gone from 970 to 290/290x claims putting the frame rate of the 970 may be higher aside, the actual gameplay on the 290/290x feel smoother, so there could be more going on than just vram usage, but something to do with how the memory interfacing is being segmented/crippled as well.

The 780Ti would most likely offer smoother gameplay than the 970, regardless of how the frame rate compares.

THanks for the helpful info, question about the tri-x on overclockers site it says core is 1000mhz yet on another UK competitor it says 1040mhz core and its the same numbered product could someone confirm?
thanks

This makes no sense at all. What has happened here is, people are jumping on the vram band wagon and ruling out the 970, dispite it being a fine card.

The above makes no sense. You say a 970 will stutter due to the vram 'issue' and yet, in reality it has more Vram than the 780ti.

The other benefit the 970 will have over the 780ti is possibly more feature level DX12 support as well as longer driver optimisations.

Another vote for another 290X here :)

This, everyone seems to still be hanging onto the belief that the card dies when it hits 3.5GB usage even though reputable sites have shown it to be untrue, but even if it was that's still 0.5GB more than the 780ti has (not to mention the 780ti has to use it's 3GB to house background stuff if you have it running like most people do, the 970 can use it's "gimped" 512MB).

You will never notice the "grunt" difference between a reference 780ti and a third party 970, you will notice the extra VRAM of the 970 in the future.

Personally id go 290x for the extra vram and because i feel comfy with AMD cards but that 780ti is a cracking deal. I have a mate who has just bought a 970 and its munching through most games really well and he plays lots of bf4 so i think whichever card you choose you'll be more than happy.

simpleness upto 1440 970 is better than 290s

780ti is about same as 970 gtx but less vram. in some games the ti is slightly quicker than 290/970 so with that id get what you want :D

heres what i notice and i have two rigs mainly use with amd and nvidia cards

amd visually is better for me colours seem more vivid clearer. nvidia performance is better but picture is slightly softer look.

so not much in it. they all within a few fps unless its a nvidia game or amd game where it maybe a bit wider.

Ok people thanks for all your help the 780ti looks great but i need a card by tomorrow i need to game! lol
Im only managing to use my pc because im using an old HD4550 lol
How long do i get to use card before i can DSR it haha

Oh and yes i just game at 1080p on 120hz screen i like to cap at about 100fps on BF games

That sounds very similar to a problem I had with a pc which turned out to be the PSU. But I'm sure you've tried it another pc to rule out everything.

If the gpu is the cause then it's most likely a dry solder joint under one of the memory chips. My current 7970 had lines and corrupt graphics/black screens. I reflowed the DDR chips with a heatgun and it sorted it.

On topic why not get a used card to tide you over until June? The 390X should be ready then.

780Ti is a stonking card and an ideal fit for 1080 or 1200p. If you're looking for one quickly, I have 2 up for sale on the MM right now after getting a Titan X...
