I'm a big fan of the like button on all the other forums I visit. I think OcUK could benefit from the like button and I'd be interested to see what the general consensus is.

The biggest criticism of the like button I have read previously was that it would encourage a certain type of posting style "for the likes". However I cannot see how that is any different to today - users still post certain types of replies to elicit a type of response.

The like is very very useful when someone quotes/responds to you and you can thank/acknowledge the response instead of either no reply or having to reply with "thanks". It can also be used to show support for a post that is essentially the same as what you would have posted. This reduces the +1 and "This" type posts.

Edit:

It has been suggested a "Thanks" button would be better than "Like".

Edit2:

So based on a feedback a "Thanks" button would be preferable. Maybe it could be trialled. Maybe GD can be excluded.

Edit3:

May we have a poll? ;)

1. Like button
2. Thanks button
3. Like button on trial basis.
4. Thanks button on trial basis.
5. No change

Dont turn one of the last good forums into facebook. No thanks.

Can you explain how it is the same as Facebook? They have a like button, but in the context of a forum it is used differently.

I've seen it on other forums, but I'd prefer 'thanks' to 'likes'. I don't think a discussion forum should be based on how many people like (read agree) with you. So really I'd prefer it with neither. I like this forum the way it is tbh.

Semantics, but yes "Thanks" makes more sense.

Pretty sure this has been discussed many many times before and the answer is always a resounding no, which I agree with.

Leave these forums as they are, they work perfectly and any changes will change the dynamic which makes it what it is.

UNLESS, upon pressing the button, an OcUK Special is delivered through said posters letterbox. This I can get on board with.

What about trialling it?

Yes yes, its convenient, but it lacks the elegance of a bespoke system designed to inform somebody of exactly why you think they're sub human scum. That's what the internet needs more of, vitriol and hatred.

You mean like a reply button where you can respond with whatever you like?

They’ve bothered to post something rather than spam a button.

Because responses is what we want. I'd rather write a post that gets someone else posting in return than gets them 'downvoting or upvoting' or 'liking or disliking' my post. It's what's so crap about reddit. See a post you dislike? Care to respond and have a discussion? Nah, just downvote it and move on.

There's no downvoting. It's simply a thanks type button as mentioned above.

People will still tell you you're an idiot, don't worry about that :)

Liking posts would ruin this forum imo, particularly this section. It’s already bad enough with people posting things for effect/lols.

I don't think it would make any difference, people already post for the LOLs. Now we can ban the OP and anyone who liked their posts :D

Like - no, usually has a negative effect IMO

Thanks - maybe, identifies those who tend to be helpful but is less likely to be used to 'thank' funny posts etc.

Ignoring GD for now (because we should, definitely) the "Thanks" button would be very useful on pretty much every other sub forum on OcUK.

Think it's fine as is really - a Like or Thanks button just makes in more impersonal; whereas taking the time to reply, keeps the discussions going imo.

They aren't mutually exclusive.
