Maybe I need a TT bike?

I would always choose deep rims for the bling but it's worth remembering how windy Lanzarote is. I probably wouldn't go there again due to the wind!

A tailwind will have you blowing along at 40mph, a headwind has you grinding away at 10mph and a crosswind has you wrestling the bars if you have deep rims. I am fairly confident with my bike handling on aerobars with deep rims and I was still caught out in some cases. Managed not to crash though.:D

I've only ridden on one set of Aero-rims, the only set I've ever owned so can't comment myself on how well they 'handle' the wind but the profile does affect this. So it's worth considering with a purchase.

I don't feel I get blown about anymore than usual on climbs or the flats but if making turns at junctions carrying speed or winding round reasonable bends they definitely can catch the wind a bit which if you're not prepared for will make you clench...

So £350 extra for planet x deep rims... Yay or nay given the options?

I've cycled Lanzarote before and not particularly worried, quite confident on a bike... Also this will have regular drop bars and aero clip ons :)

I can't decide for you.:p

I ride deep rims on nearly all my bikes. I can handle them in the wind. I ride them because I like how they look and sound and IMO aero trumps weight always. I will climb the same speed whether my rims weigh 1400g or 1800g unless it's something really steep like Hardknott Pass.

If you are confident in your bike handling and don't mind paying for them, go deep.

If they're Planet X own rims I wouldn't pay an extra £350 for them when you could buy a whole set of exactly the same set from china for about £220 and get them tensioned up yourself for £25. Then flog the originals.

PS always deep sections.

Got a link?
And anything to back up the fact that they're the same rims?

That has got me interested!

Oh and what is the tensioning all about? Not heard of having to have a new set tensioned correctly...

Agreed /re deep section. Might be alarming in the wind at first but you absolutely get used to it. To be honest, when I was a less experienced cyclist I found non-deep-section more alarming to deal with when there were gusts anyhow so...all down to experience.

As BennyC said, check out the CCW thread. I paid more like £300 for my wheels from Aliexpress but I went for slightly more expensive options..and disc brakes.

Think mine were 250 for 1450g 50mm carbon with basalt braking surface with novatec hubs. 2013 cycling 2013 on eBay. Great seller and I'll be buying again. They turned up true with good tension and the rims survived my beast descent of sa calobre.

Ah yes, I meant to mention that too. After all the horror stories about the tension setup I took my wheels to a local (very well regarded) wheel builder. They kind of laughed me out of the place and said that the wheels were fine.

I ride with Zipp 404 which are about 58mm depth iirc and they are fine. I rode in 25+mph gusting side winds the other day and it does catch the wind a bit, so it causes you to drift but then I'm quite heavy so probably effects me less.
