Mayonnaise!

I would give it an oil flush and then change. Make sure it has decent 5W30 oil in there.

I would get the coolant gas tested just to be on the safe side too but I doubt it's HGF.

Why? if its a short trip car you'd end up doing this every week!
I have never seen mayo on the dipstick before so perhaps the oil is in a bad, un-maintained way.

One of my kids had a sludgy bottom end, my wife reckons they had an upset stomach but it's obviously a case of H.G.F.......

What is it with internet forums? I've noticed this all over the place, the moment anyone posts with a cooling issue, radiator problem, coolant leak or some mayo under the cap 15 people post to tell them they've got a failing head gasket.

It's completely normal for a car used for trips so short that they never reach operating temperature.

Tell me about it ! Its not the first time I've seen people doing it on here :(

That's because the majority of people posting replies have no real technical knowledge and are just posting hearsay and badly made assumptions.

They hear, probably down the pub, one guy saying his car has mayo in the engine, and "the resident mechanic" (who is usually the resident plumber, electrician, gambling machine expert, etc.) replies knowledgably "That'll be your head gasket mate..." to which his sidekick nods sagely.

Then, next time someone posts "My car only does 2 miles a day and I've noticed some mayo under the oil filler" they immediately try to impress with their second hand knowledge and reply "That'll be your head gasket, mate, definately!"

It's not just HGF threads either. It happens in most threads to a degree. The amount of "advice" I see on here from people who have never driven the car, or fitted the mod, or even lifted the bonnet of a motor. The skill is to seperate the wheat from the chaff and end up with some actual useful advice.

When my dad was using it entirely to do half mile journeys (and never servicing it) my old Xantia often had mayo on the dipstick and under the cap. As soon as I started using it and doing long journeys it cleared up.

Might be worth making sure your mate is getting the oil changed regularly.

My missus had this in her Golf - 2000 1.6 auto.

Turned out it was a mixture of poor maintenance, short journeys and some sort of temperature guage failure (lambda sensor? not sure am not mechanical). Mayo does not always equal HGF!
