Mazda 6 MPS

Honda Accord type R?

Don't think it would be much of an upgrade from my current Mazda 6. The 2.5L needs to be revved like mad to get anything out of it, and that annoys me somewhat - can't see VTEC helping. :p

Somewhat of a hi-jack but a 2.0l petrol Mazda 6 TS2 has come up just round the corner from me at a reasonable price - anything to look out for on this model other than the rust issues highlighted in the OP?

I think they use a lot of the same components as Fords of the era, so may share issues. Like the steering rack one. That is quite an expensive repair.

Depends if it's first generation or second. First will probably be rust ridden by now unless it's been looked after (but being typically run into the ground by families, that's rare). If it's second generation, rust is less of an issue. My 2008 hasn't got any rust on it. Some bubbles on the alloys is all. Despite them both being revisions of the Mazda G platform which Ford also used, they don't use any Ford parts that I know of. The engines and powertrain are all Japanese in origin so parts can be quite expensive over here. The Fords that shared the platform were for the US market only. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that though.

I think I've been put off the Mazda 6 MPS now, after doing more reading on from the advice in this thread. Going to look at a mk1 Audi TT tomorrow... :o

Eh? There's loads of 225s under £5k. Even the V6 can be had.

Sadly the two (both 225s) I saw today were bit too rough for me. Scratched, kerbed alloys, worn interiors. Think I'd be better off keeping the Mazda longer until I can invest in something more worthwhile.

I've enjoyed last 3 6 MPs's lol

Great cars and shift well, only major problem I had with one of mine was a knackerd drive shaft.

I've moved over to a diseasel 7 seater now :(
Had a drive about in the mps today and it felt like a go cart in comparison lol. Time to give it a clean and get some decent photos before sticking it up for sale

Was at the point of full remap and catless but never got round to getting a bigger turbo :( shame think I would've enjoyed it.

Ouch, that's quite the downgrade!

I think if they'd carried on making them they would be a better proposition with more available parts and expertise around. Sadly I can't afford to have an unreliable car at the moment... which has led me to a new idea - buying an MX-5 as a second car. I know I know, it probably sounds like I've gone full Acme... :D

As a bit of fun, and something to learn how to do stuff on (I'm not completely useless but I've never seriously attempted to learn much motoring DIY skills - although I did change the water pump and thermostat on an old Golf a couple of years ago successfully), and as I do have a garage to keep it in over the winter, it's probably not the worst idea in the world? I wouldn't want to spend a lot, £1k maximum I think, leaving me with the budget for any rust work that needs doing, plus tax and insurance.

Hmm, something to think about.
