Hi, please advise on this situation as I am trying to get this sorted. I recently bought a Abit SL7 Mb and Pentium 4 3.2 gig chip from ebay with a jet cool master fan. The board has arrived as described, but the heatsink and fan have no clips to hold them in place, so I have mentioned this to the guy, and he states that he used paste to hold them together without clips as I have asked for the clips to be supplied or a refund, it may be me being stupid but how can a heatsink be held in place with paste without clips in a tower on its side? I have never heard of this, as I told him, but I stated I would ask on a forum before returning it if he cannot supply the clips. Your opinion is greatly appreciaited to send to this guy.

Welcome!

1st of all - I'd edit the post to remove the auction site name as it is not allowed.

Is it the retention bracket you are talking about??

It is possible with a light alluminium HSF and very sticky thermal paste, but even if it does hang onto the CPU it won't apply enough pressure for effective cooling, especially with 3.2Ghz P4 it will overheat in minutes; Usually people remove retention bracket to fit water or phase change cooling.

I assume it's a socket 478??

Send the board back, unless it was stated in the auction that the brackets werent included.

You could use thermal paste but:

1. You would never be able to remove it from the CPU again without causing danage.
2. I wouldnt provide good contact with the CPU core resulting in poor cooling.
