MBP as a main computer

really want to get a MBP but due to the bit high price of it i am not able to afford it unless I sell my gaming desktop rig.

so my question to you MBP owners is, if in case that I sell my current desktop PC and get a MBP, can it function as the main (and only) computer without any heating or any other problem?

by main computer i would expect it to run almost most of the week, usual stuff during the day, video editing and stuff like that, maybe a bit of gaming, and possibe if i choose to download stuff at night so i'd want it to be able to do that as well

As long as the graphics card can play the games you have in mind it will handle it fine.

My standard MacBook is my only machine and is mostly on 24/7. I use it for browsing, encoding, downloading, photo editing etc etc... Never had any overheating or stability problems. I would expect the "pro" version to be even more capable!

I use mine solely as my main computer now and couldn't be happier. I am not going to lie to you, when playing games or doing some CPU intensive works makes it really warm, warm to the point that I wouldn't put it on my lap for any considerable time.

For light gaming the MBP is great. When playing CSS I get around 140FPS at 1440x900 with no AA or AF which is pretty damn good. Look on youtube some guy has put up a lot of popular games that run on an older spec MBP (2.2GHZ, 128MB 8600 etc) and it seems to handle even things like BioShock albeit with a slightly lower resolution perfectly fine.

I have left my MBP on overnight loads of times before and it has been perfectly fine!

Hope this helps,

Ditto. Mine's the only machine I have on these days, and it doesn't get as much sleep as I do :)

Same here, my MBP is my only computer. I have no problems at all, though I don't play any games. When your hard drive fills up, you can also put your itunes library on an external drive so safe space. Definitiely the way to go I think.

ok i am really happy to hear that, all i've got left to do is to sell my pc :)
Do people really buy second hand computers these days? *prays*

I started using the current gen MacBookPro as my main machine (after being a windows user most of my life) a few months ago.

No matter what people on here say the machine heats up a lot compared to previous native Intel/Windows machines I have used. I have confirmed this on multiple machines. Partly this is due to the Aluminium chasis absorbing the heat, I guess. After an hour or so of running a virtual machine in VMWARE the machine will be hotter and can be uncomfortable on your lap. Also Vmware and Native Bootcamp do make the machine heat up, hence kick off fans, much quicker.

I find it strange that only Johnzor has mentioned the above to be honest.

Also something MAJOR I have been reading for the last few weeks is that EVERY SINGLE one of the 8600M GT chips Nvidia made (the gpu in all this gen and last gen MBPs) are broken and will require replacement. I imagine this could well involve Apple issuing newer machines and also having to have old ones retrofitted in store or return to Apple). Nvidia have already allocated money to this and it is weird that Apple have been silent regarding this.

I love the macbook pro, but it is not without it's faults.

I was going to say I have never heard or seen of a problem with my 8600M GT, do you happen to have a source for the issues being reported?

I am worried about my MBP now :(

I too have had no issues (having said that in bootcamp XP it crashes after standby's and hibernates that are due to the GPU from what I gather).

I saw story on inquirer yesterday after having read it in other places. I understand inquirer is seen as a bit of a trashy site in terms of rumours etc but this info comes direct from Nvidia.

Also I found some forum or something where people said the temps on the cards seem high.

Type "nvidia 8600m gt faulty" into google (I cannot be bothered to post links as some will be competitors and other's are not). It is all 8400M chips as well. This will probably affect a lot of vendors (Dell/Tosh/Apple etc).
RP2000, whats the issue with the GPU? And when is it likely to break?
I am no expert and am only going on what I have read, but Nvidia themselves admit the fault, the actual fault details are probably beyond my technical comprehension. From my past knowledge surely all GPU faults lead to excessive heat or graphics corruption? I am suspicious of this fault being why bootcamp XP shows corrupted video overlay after standby hibernate and often hard locks the machine in bootcamp XP, despite what drivers you use.

Hmm, but despite this fault the MBP remains otherwise fine to use?

Yeah (as do other machines withe the chips). Like I said I don't really understand the details of the fault (something to do with ASIC?). I would imagine there will be some sort of recall at some point. There is obviously something fundamental wrong as Nvidia are putting aside $250mill to remedy this and their share prices took a huge hit.

lol if they think $250 million would cover all laptops with those chips! I would love to have apple give me a nice new MBP to replace my 6 month old one :D

I have a MBP, it is coming up to two years old now and I have used it every day (except when away from home) and it has performed flawlessly every time. In that period I have rebooted only about 10 times but only after an update. It is, without doubt, the best computer I have ever owned. OS X is so much better than any other OS I have used it is scary just how crap Windows is after you get used to it. The only person I would advise against getting a Mac are heavy gamers or those that require very specialist applications. For general computing there is nothing better than a MBP, imho.

FACT: You are cooler and girls like you more if you have a MBP. :D
