MBP as a main computer

I use my MBP as my main computer :)

Took a while to get used to. but its not exactly rocket science just a little odd at first.
 
I've been using one as my main machine for over 2 years. It's a tad underpowered for gaming nowadays but the x1600 was cutting edge for a laptop in early 2006. It's well upto most tasks now as I've upgraded the RAM and HDD. A new MBP should be well up to most jobs.

I tend to use dual screens and external keyboard/mouse with the laptop on a stand when I'm at the desk. My Windows desktop only gets used for gaming.

Makes a good download box as it doesn't use a lot of power too. Buy a mac, save the environment ;)
 
I use mine as my main work and domestic machine. I do have a separate games machine but that doesn't get used much either now.
It's a 2.4 C2D SR, 4GB, 8600M GT 256MB.. "MacBook Pro 3,1" (mid 2007)

My MBP is just out of warrantee (April I get a reminder via email about AppleCare). Although if it goes wrong with this issue I certainly don't expect to be paying for it.
Fitness for purpose (product lifetime).
 
I got my MBP about a fortnight ago and I can say without a doubt it's the finest computer I've ever bought. Admittedly, it was a little more costly than other laptops in the same range, but to be honest, it's been worth it.

I use it as my main machine, and I make music, browse the internet, play games, etc, and have not been disappointed with it, except perhaps a little with Crysis, but that game challenges most computers anyway.

I think one of the most enjoyable parts of it so far that most people tend to miss when looking at it is OS X. I wanted to hook the MBP up to a TV yesterday to play a film and it took about 30 seconds to connect, set native resolutions, and reconfigure the primary monitor to be the TV. Very impressed. I've been a Windows user since 3.1 and I won't go back now.
 
i used a macbook for main computer for a long time till i broke it then got a pro and use it as main computer most of the time i got a pc rig but its really just for games macbook pro is main still

I would imagine there will be some sort of recall at some point. There is obviously something fundamental wrong as Nvidia are putting aside $250mill to remedy this and their share prices took a huge hit.

I read about this too, apparently the fault is the reason why the GPU idles at a temp much higher than the CPU. For example right now, on my MBP, the GPU is idling at 62C and CPU is at 51C.
Itll be interesting to see when and if Apple issue a recall, cos I can imagine it would be a logistical nightmare.
 
Yep. That's a lot of new motherboards. Given that the CPU and GPU are soldered on it get's a bit expensive.

My MBP had a mainboard swap due to the early bluetooth/audio bug. Parts price on the invoice was over £800 IIRC.

Mine is only idleing 6C higher than my CPU (43 vs 37C)

I'll talk to applecare tomorrow to see what they say.

Wouldn't mind having a nice new Penryn based replacement ha ha

Soldered CPU's? Didn't think any company was that tight with laptop components these days.
 
I presume you are saving a few pennies by getting the HE (Higher Education) discount? There is bound to be a back to school offer with a free / cut price ipod soon too. Normally September, which you could sell on if you want to maximise your return.
