MBP damage after HD upgrade

4. Seek advice from Apple's support forums instead of repeatedly asking the handful of people who post here who clearly haven't experienced the same problem as you.

I don't want to be antagonistic but I just do not understand why you refuse to do this. It was the same with the time machine 'issue' you had that was never resolved.

Fans on becuase of higher heat output? Can you check this between the two drives? Hum caused by higher speed disk? That would have been my suggestion, your apple tech went for a rare explanation.

I'm looking into it. The fans of the original HD run within tolerance. Just need to put the WD HD back in. Again!
The hum can be made to disappear by pressing on the laptop front edge too.

Ok, sorry about for bothering you.

Though if you could post a link to the apple support forum thread I'd be interested to read the responses there.

If you can stop the hum by applying pressure, would suggest that the fitment/alignment is not quite correct. You could try checking the screws and maybe a rubber grommet or similar?

Tried that mate, many many times. I can't see how fitment can be wrong.
The noise will also abate if the front edge is raised, so it can't be pressure dependant.

Thanks for the reply.

Presumably you mean the HD sits too tall, or too long? A short seems plausible, and has been suggested amongst other theories.

Going to try a different brand HD to be sure.

Apologies

With the WD HD installed, the fans ran at correct idle speed, and temp was nominal.

Now fitted a Seagate 320gb.

Although the symptoms are greatly reduced, there is still excess noise. Fan speed seems erratic too.

Could this just be the nature of 7200 drives? I surely can rule out installation probs.

Think I may have to live with this
