Hey

I don't really use the apple section much. Been a PC user for ages.

I have done some reasearch and decided that I want to make the plunge and get a Macbook pro. I have been toying with the idea for nearly 4 months now but I still cannot quite decide if I should buy it or not.

I read on the macrumors website that there maybe be an update of the model. Should I wait and hope that I dont end up waiting a year intill new models come out ?

Also with regards to hardware, my main use will be for music editing and photo management (maybe slight adjustments to) and work. But the whole macworld seems a bit scary to me as specs of laptops seem well average at best compared to a windows laptop. Obviously I can't compare. So just wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to what I should be looking at.

Have you checked your favourite music packages are on OSX? I ask this because latency is key. Using Windows on the laptop is possible but I wouldn't advise running music apps under VM due to the additional latency.

I'm currently developing a MIDI-based application for OSX.

I was thinking about trying mac software for the music editing. Logic Express 9 looks pretty good and from demos and reviews seems a pretty solid bit of software.

The idea is to use mac as OSX. I dont intend on using VM.

I don't think you'll see another hardware update until late next year when/if sandybridge takes off.
We'll maybe get USB 3 next year with the new chipset changes etc.

Mid to early 2011 for Sandy bridge and USB3/LightPeak is my bet.

As ever, if the current specifications are fine for what you want then buy buy buy!

I find it odd that apple were using core2 chips for years and years and only the i5/i7 M series for a year and then move straight on to Sandy Bridge next year. Apple usually tend to milk old hardware pretty good so I'm a bit critical of this sudden change. However if the newer chips are cooler, smaller and at a good price I suppose it's logical :) Can't wait to see what the the SB desktop chips bring to the table though.
