I'm running a 2011 base spec 13" MBP, and it's been running slowly recently. As a bit of a newbie Mac user, I'm wondering if there's anything I've done to it/should have been doing to it to maintain it.

I get the spinning beach ball up quite often, particularly within Safari. What should I be looking into to speed things up?

Repair Disk Permisions via Disk Utilites? Maybe this could help the beachballing problem I do this quite reguarly which I guess is a little OTT but both my Mac systems run like a dream.

Another thing I would recommend is Onyx for Mac

"OnyX is a multifunctional utility for Mac OS X. It allows you to verify the startup disk and the structure of its System files, to run miscellaneous tasks of system maintenance, to configure the hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Spotlight, and of some of Apple's own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more."

You can pick it up on a free download just google it!

Hope to hear from you if you have any joy!

Thanks mate, I'll try later tonight or tomorrow and see how it goes :)

With Onyx theres an Automation tab then click on Execute.. Bare in mind once you restart your computer will be rebuilding "Spotlight" you can click in the top right and it will tell you how long is left usually takes 10-15 on my MBP but after that you should fingers crossed see an improvement. Ill be checking back to see how you have gone on, no problem!

Need to be a bit careful with Onyx

i totally screwed my permissions using it, couldn't open iTunes folder mail folder loads of things. Although to be honest it was my fault as i just ticked just about every box :P

anyway had to re install my system using Time machine, weirdly using migration assistant.

Well I can imagine Onyx isn't problem free although on both my machines I can say I have had no problems what so ever.

Everything has it's risks these days!

I haven't used Onyx yet, but I ran the Repair Disk Permissions function, and it seems to be going notably quicker, which is a win. I'll leave it alone for now before risking Onyx :)
