McDonald's is running their very successful Monopoly profit-raising scheme again.

You get stickers with the items that have the highest profit margin for McDonalds, or those which they wish to promote the sale of for some other reason. Each sticker has a monopoly symbol on it or a free food item from McDonalds. If you get a full set of Monopoly symbols, you win a prize from an overpriced mp3 player with a silly name to £500,000.

Unsurprisingly, the way it works is that for any set, one is very rare and the others are common. This leads people into thinking that they are close to winning ("I only need one!") whereas in fact they aren't.

Customers therefore tend to buy the stuff with stickers on, which is the stuff McDonalds particularly want to sell, and tend to buy more stuff. It also attracts some extra business, from people who are undecided which fast food place to get some food from.

I've little doubt that the extra profits will be at least double the cost of the promotion.
 
just bought a macdonalds because of this thread! damn you and damn my will power.

Now I don't normally eat McDonald's but my mates and I stopped off at a drive-thru the other day because we had nothing to eat at their house, ordered 3x large meals. This is what I've got:
