Hi folks I have Norton 2007 Internet Security on my desktop but on my laptop I have mcAfee I like them both and they have both been excellent protecting my systems.

My question is, which of the two is better? i.e offers better protection? I bough t the oem of Norton when I built my desktop and got McAfee free for a year when I signed up to Sky. They are both due to expire soon and so I want to choose one to continue with.

I think you'll struggle to get any recommedations of either product! I use Avast, which is free. Works brilliantly. Use it in conjunction with Windows Defender + Firewall and common sense.

The only one i would ever pay for is Kaspersky.

Seen sooo many rigs get messed up because of mcafee messing up and letting something in.

Nobody here would recomend either mcafee or norton....even if they were free :)!

I had great fun removing norton system work 2003/4 from our desktop pc, the simple add/remove programs didn't work so after searching google I had to delete a load of registry files then go onto nortons site to download another file to completley make sure it was all removed. ffs. using avg now. :)

Sounds more like you were removing an actual virus! @ norton for being consistently awful.

If you must pay, get NOD32, im using it atm, it is fantastic, however, if you don't want to pay, get Avast Antivirus, and stick Super Antispyware on alongside it. Should you want a firewall too, get ZA or Comodo.

I will never ever recomend McAffe after my experience. Something (dunno what) corrupted one of the macafee files. Macafe scans this file, thinks it s virus, tries to remove it, cant, because its using said file, BSODs the machine. It would do this within about 60 seconds of turing the PC on, so took me a while to sort!

I've been using Mcafee for 6 years without a single issue so if you want an answer to your question then I'd choose it over Norton. I do agree with the others though that Avast or AVG and a dose of common sense works just as well.:)

You dont need a firewall unless you want to monitor outgoing connections and are really anal. A decent anti virus is more than enough, a router on top is even better though :)
